During running back Mark Ingram‘s time with the Saints, he has split backfield duties with a variety of backs and he’s set to do so again this year with Adrian Peterson joining the team.

Ingram has not shared any displeasure about that arrangement and said that the two backs have helped each other since they began working together this spring. That doesn’t mean Ingram feels he’s incapable of being in a bigger role than the one he has played for the Saints.

“I just want to keep proving that I’m the best complete back in this game,” Ingram said, via Mike Triplett of ESPN.com. “You know Le'Veon Bell, David Johnson, I feel like I can do the same thing that those guys do, given the opportunity. So that’s my mindset, that’s my goal. I want to be the best back in this league. That’s what I come out here and work for every single day.”

As Ingram said, he’s not likely to get the same workload as the other two backs, but his 96 catches over the last two years and ability to chip in as a pass protector when needed are both valuable things to bring to the Saints offense. In fact, Triplett reports that the passing game is where Ingram “has excelled at the most” during training camp and continued success there should leave him with a good chance of being the most-used back in New Orleans.

Only difference, Mark, they were doing it out of the gate; you took five (5) years to figure things out...

Glad you're aboard and part of the deepest RB depth chart in the league, now do your job!!!

Signing AP was an absolutely brilliant move as it's lit a fire under Ingram's arse and excellent leverage when contract is due...

And it seems like every year the Saint's need someone to serve as a match under Ingram's but before he starts producing. At this level you shouldn't need to be benched in order to get the message.

Cut him a little slack, he wasn't given the 3 down back role early on like those other guys were, purely because Payton goes nuts over mismatches.

He always had a loaded backfield of people taking snaps away

2012 - PT23, Ivory, Sproles and Ingram
2013 - PT23, Khiry, Sproles and Ingram

In those early years Payton pretty much refused to have anyone but Sproles in on 3rd down.

I like MI. I like the way he runs. I'm rooting for the guy to build on last year. He's a good back.

Re: Mark Ingram: I can do the same things Le’Veon Bell, David Johnson do

MI's hole reading, cutting, and quickness have improved. He is at his peak right now so we will have him for this year and two more I'd wager before he goes downward.

This kid Victor looks serious, and Kamara looks nice.

Mark is pretty good but he needs to stop with the being one of the greatest stuff. Some of that is circumstances like he said but most of it is not. Hightower took a lot of his thunder away for that reason.

Re: Mark Ingram: I can do the same things Le’Veon Bell, David Johnson do

Ingram has always been and will remain this year a solid RB.
The way the Saints use him, his career should last longer than some overused RBs.

He should be happy he's here.

Bash me if you want; but talk is cheap. I'm tired of hearing how great these guys think they are and blah blah blah. Shut up, don't talk to the press about yourself, prove it on the field.

I was all for getting him and glad we did. Good use of a 28th pick considering we were going to lose picks the following year. Overall it worked out and he could be in position to have another strong output.

It did take him a while but I think he is very underrated. We weren't running the ball well as a whole the first couple years either. He's definitely more versatile than I thought he would be.

Bell and DJ can run on most good run defenses.

I thought he proved it last year by being the first thousand yard back we've had since Deuce and doing it at over five yards a carry. Can't we give the guy some credit?

We would only have lost the No.1, but because it was traded along with a 2R for MI, we lost two more picks...

No disrespect to Mark, who I think is a good player and am happy to have on the team, but he is no Le'veon Bell or David Johnson. Both are far more dynamic than he is. He's only similar to them in that he has a solid all around skill set. Those guys are super stars though and he's just not.

And, for the record, I have been very critical of Ingram, mostly the picks it took, the reach for a poor fit to our offense, and his sloooow development...

But I do think he's a quality back who needs constant competition to keep him focused, working hard...

His got an appropriate salary cap number, that can be tweaked if he elects to stay after next season...

And I like him now, what he can do, and the role Payton has carved out for him on this team...

I'd just tell him to STFU and Do Your Job!

I just don't care for him running his mouth when you look at what the Saints have invested and the returns we're just now getting...

Marques Colston, Pierre Thomas & Drew Brees have really spoiled me as a Saints Fan - they're ideal ProFootball Players for my perspective...

Considering they signed Adrian Peterson and drafted Kamara, I'd guess the Saints aren't as confident in Ingram as Ingram is.

Name one period during Payton's tenure in which the Saints haven't used a RB by committee. I don't think there is any lack of confidence in Ingram. They simply know that you cannot have too many good RB's on your roster. Don't forget 2011 when we ended up with Ladell Betts and Julius Jones in the rotation with Chris Ivory. Pierre Thomas AND Reggie Bush were injured. Our offense was rolling and we were coming off three straight games scoring more than 30 points. Then, with the depleted RB corps we lost two of the final three and only getting the wild card. We limped into the playoffs on the road against a 7-9 Seattle and lost. If we would have had a deeper RB group we could have won that game.

With all due respect, the Saints D could not stop Beastmode that game. That was a disgrace.

Lynch had 131 yards that game and 67 of those came on that one play. The Saints in total had 78 led by Julius Jones with 59. And six of those were by Brees. We lost by five (5) points. If we would have had solid depth at RB it very well could have made enough of a difference to pull out a win.

I watched him in college and loved the selection. Roll Tide!

Still, it did take awhile for him to put it together in a complete package.

LMAO have yet to see it and at 28 yrs old his time is running out as is his contract in 2019. He has done little since he was drafted not to look closely at RB in any draft since the saints added him.

This year it is

Derrius Guice RB LSU 5106 222 4.45 #5 Jr
What else does the kid need to prove? Pass catching? Rushing? Blocking? If the answer is yes to all 3 at draft time then he is the perfect fit for the saints offense. I mean PERFECT.

Letting Mark walk as a fear agent does not make me nervous. never has. he is a good serviceable back and that is about it.

Yeah. He had a good year last year. After how many seasons???

2011
Rushing: 474 yds/3.9 avg/5 TD
Receiving: 46 yds/4.2 avg/0 TD
1 Fumble

2012
Rush: 602 yds/3.9 avg/5 TD
Receiving: 29 yds/4.8 avg/0 TD
0 Fumble

2013
Run: 386/4.9/1
Catch: 68/9.7/0
0 Fumble

2014
Run: 964/4.3/9
Catch: 145/5.0/0
3 Fumbles

2015
Run: 769/4.6/6
Catch: 405/8.1/0
2 Fumbles

2016
Run: 1,043/5.1/6
Catch: 319/6.9/4
2 Fumbles

I'm not taking any credit from Mark. I won't say he didn't have a good year last year. I didn't single Mark out. I said I am tired of hearing these "players" talk about how great they are. They should all stop the self induced hype and prove how good they are on the field. Talk is extremely cheap. Anyone can talk about how good they are. You are only great when others talk about how great you are.

Mark was a great college player.
Deuce was good college player and a good Pro.
Reggie Bush was a great college player.
Tom Brady was a college player, Great HoF Pro. (Yes I left out "good")
Brett Favre was an ok college player, Great HoF Pro.
Drew was a good College player, Great HoF Pro.

Nothing against Mark. I like him, was happy when we drafted him. 1 great season out of 6, doesn't blow my skirt up. I want him to have a better year this year. He is learning how the Pro game is played. Not often do you see a Pro get better as time goes by. Mark seems to be doing just that. I hope it continues.

We rested our starters against TB and went from playing Dallas, Cincy, and St.Louis to going on the road against one of the AFC's top teams in DECEMBER. How can he sit there and say a better run game wins in Baltimore? Reggie certainly would not have won there.
