Dennis Allen Doesn't Suck

Quote:

If they had an award for the comeback coordinator of the year in the NFL, Dennis Allen would have to be running away with it.

The New Orleans Saints' defense had turned into a punchline in recent years -- and it was again through the first two weeks of this season. But now it is delivering knockout blows, as the Saints (4-2) have won four straight games to emerge as one of the league's hottest teams.

But as you might have guessed, Allen isn't preparing any sort of acceptance speech.

"I know for me, specifically, I'm not looking for any type of validation," said Allen, who has been on the job since late in the 2015 season, when he took over after Rob Ryan was fired. "My focus is really all about, 'How do we play better as a defense and how do we continue to improve?' That's really all this is about.

"The thing about the NFL is the best teams are the most consistent teams. And that's really what my focus [is] and what our focus is as a team."

With all due respect, the improvements in the defense are more of a 50/50 between the hirings of Mike Nolan, Ryan Nielsen and the relative good health of the CBs...

I actually got on the show "Late Hits" (Sirius XM) and got to talk on the air with Gil Brandt. My question to him was simply "is the Saints defense for real?"

His answer was yes. He mentioned some players but settled in on Dennis Allen AND Mike Nolan as the keys, and he went on a little extra about Nolan saying that he might just be the real difference maker.

Although I'm liking Allen's schemes right now. The question is will he get too predictable further on down the road?

Mike Nolan has coached HOF LBers at both the collegiate and national football league levels; he's probably forgotten more than DA knows right now...

We just had to surround DA with coaches with proven pedigrees and not neptotistic re-tread NFL "Family"...

I don't think that's exactly fair to Allen. There is so truth to what you are saying, I think those things you mention are very important to where we are now... but our D wouldn't be playing like this unless we were getting good play selection and schemes from our D coordinator.

No Truth? Differences between last year and this year - Mike Nolan, Ryan Nielsen, Healthy CB depth? How are those not truths???

I must give DA credit, although the DL, lb & db coaches mentally prepared them, DA came up with the best game plan to play to their strengths. Whoever came with the plan to sit Harris and go with Crawley deserve most of the credit.

These are all Dennis Allens guys. I hold the Coordinators responsible and give credit to them more than most. The FO does not go out and just hire coaches nor add players without a huge amount of approval from the those Coordinators that have to work with them. This includes the draft.

Allen is far from done with rebuilding the mess Ryan left behind. Adding players and getting players head screwed on straight takes time.

Year 3 will be adding a few additional key pieces and improving the bench. Expect improvement on defense but more so in special teams play.

Year 4 should be the hallmark years for DA. Fine tuning time

Year 5 is the hitting on all cylinders year. :p

I am glad we waited on DA and not fire him as we did the other coaches. I think a lesson to be learned here is have a plan to improve the areas that needed improving. Better talent in key areas. Have a plan. Stick with it.

The other coaches didn't seem to have a plan and didn't seem to have an answer.

Allen might be part of the solution but i think glenn deserves more credit. He has that secondary playing way better than before. Our pass rush still isnt great but ive seen a good bit of coverage sacks this year cause the secondary is blanketing receivers alot better than before. Also we are finally picking ball off way more from the past cpl of years. I guess thats whats happens when you have a multi time pro bowl corner as your secondary coach instead of so joe blow like mcgriff.

It is also addition by subtraction.
Not that matters in the grand scheme, but I will never forgive Payton for the wasted years he created by keeping his buddies around here.

Mine are Max time frames :chug:

I give DA the same time frame I give rookies to earn that new contract. 4 to 5 years.
At 3 I give that gel time 12 games
At 4 I will be impatient.
At 5 I will be ballistic.

I am expecting big things going into December this year. The word unit will apply to the defense and needs will be easy to see. Miss assignments will be minimized. Staying health will govern it all I know.
