Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

"There's still things I feel like we're leaving out there," Brees continued, "opportunities that we're leaving out there, that if we want to accomplish and go where we want to go, then we've got to continue to improve upon and get better at those things. But when you can walk away from games saying that and yet you still won, that's a good thing."

Especially when this was considered a potential last-dance season for Payton and Brees, who were coming off three consecutive losing years. Payton is protected some by his considerable contract, and Brees by his made-man standing and scoreboard-tilting stats, but their marriage wasn't about to survive a fourth straight 7-9 year.

This is dumb as ****. I think he'll have several, maybe even better, shots in the coming years.

I thought so to after the 2009 season.

Marino thought the same after his rookie season!

But this roster is filled with very young talented players with more to be added.

Dynasty Baby!

This year is his next best shot, not his last best shot.

Our improved defense and dominant run game probably gave him 2 or 3 more shots with this team.

He ain't dead yet!

Ain't nobody worried about his arm strength this week eh?

Re: Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

huh?
I'm thinking next year this team should be even better to make a Super Bowl run. We have a legit defense, even with lots of new faces, and they'll only be better next year. And the offense, are you kidding me? We have a running game. A running game that opens up the passing game. A passing game with a Hall of Fame QB that can still get it done at a high level. And we don't even have a frikin TE.

To me, this year was a fluke of talent that came together sooner than expected. This team is no where close to peaking yet.
Remember the 2006 season? We knew we had something special brewing, but we didn't bring Lombardi home until the 2009 season. We might be one & done in the playoffs this year, but that certainly won't be the expectation next year.

Brees has one more season left. Or at least as a top tier Qb anyway. Face the facts, he’s lost a step. Luckily we’ve tapped into some players to take the burden off of him so he doesn’t have to carry the team. If it weren’t for our running game and defense stepping up I think it would really take a toll on him. We may be able to get a couple more years out of him if our defense gets better and he gets a little more protection. He can make it as a smart game manager if he has to but the days of him airing it out to save the day are numbered.

What are you basing Brees only having one season left as a top tier QB and losing a step?

Father Time and the fact he’s been throwing short and under a lot more than he ever has. Plays like the pass to Ginn. It’s bound to happen. It doesn’t make him a bad QB or reflect on anything he’s done in the past. It’s just life.

I don't like talking about future years, as you never really know what's going to happen... and I think we have a really good shot at winning this year. That being said, I don't think this will be our best season with this group. We have a very good football team... it's just a very flawed football team that is still lacking talent at a few important positions. If we can fill those spots in the draft or in the off-season I think we can dominate the league for a few years.

I believe on the play that you are basing your comments on Brees was pressured and couldn't step into the throw.

I've seen Brady miss throws and I don't read anyone saying he has lost a step and isn't a top tier QB!

It is called terminal negativity. Always expecting the worst.

Last year many of you, including myself said that if our defense was just middle of the pack our offense had what it takes to make us contenders. Last year our running game wasn’t all that great . Not w here we are, defense is much improved from last year. If our run game is completely shut down or if god forbid Kamara or Ingram goes down do you still think that would be the case?
Our defense has improved but without a running game would you feel as confident knowing it was on Brees to carry the team?
Last year I would have. This year not so much.

He threw for 180 yards in the last 9 minutes against Washington. I think he might still have the ability to win a game or two

Brees doesnt wanna hear any of this. He wants Dan Marinos and Peytons all time passing records. I predict he retires the NFL all time leader in yards and TDs in 3 or 4 yrs. With 2 or 3 championships? WhoDat!

Drew is the Julio Franco of the NFL. He's going to play until he's 60.

That’s total bull crap. He doesn’t want anyone’s record. He just wants to win games. If the game is a runaway like in Buffalo then he may try in stretch it but He wants championship.

Re: Drew Brees is staring down his last best shot

Brees is missing a few receiving toys this year

The screen game is fabulous most of the time w Kamera and Ingram

Michael Thomas is clutch - good telepathy with Drew
He has real football smarts

Ginn has shown spurts but he's not as sure handed as Cooks was

Snead is mia after a great season last year

Brandon Coleman gets one in the seam occasionally but is a hell of a down field blocker. (He threw multiple hussle blocks on the big Ingram run against Carolina)

Tight ends? What tight ends?
Don't need Jimmy just somebody competant

Drew needs a new upgrade to a piece or two to give him more options.

But he has always went far with less
And made the receivers around him better

Cooks caught 68% of the passes Brees threw to him. That's good.
Ginn's caught 77% of the passes thrown to him this season. That's crazy good.

Thanks. I was about to pull those numbers up myself when I read that.

Brees arm doesn't look any different to me. Brees will make a bad throw and people will be like "oh my he's aging" . I've seen him make those same bad throws when he was younger though. Brees has always been an incredibly accurate guy, but I've seen him let a few get away from him.. especially when he tries to force it.

Really! Remember the end of the Jimmy era?
