@RapSheet
The #Saints and veteran S Kurt Coleman agreed to terms on a 3-year deal worth up $18M, source said. He gets a sizeable $6.5M in year 1.

Welcome to the team. Veteran depth is important. Coleman had a subpar season in 2017. Was it his knee?

This officially means KV is out.

Thoughts?

Not watched many non Saint games in the last 2 years so not quite as up on players at the moment. Swapping to night shifts in May so will be watching loads of games next year

The front office must really like him

Great signing, great depth - very fortunate for this to have fallen into our laps...

Now, let's get some more help, depth for that defense, Free Agents the Saints need to have a conversation:

LB Tahir Whitehead

LB Zach Brown

DE Muhammad Wilkerson

DE Adrian Clayborn

DE Brent Urban

NT Dontari Peo

CB Morris Claiborne

CB Rashaan Melvin

CB Patrick Robinson

CB Aaron Colvin

And with Honey Badger CB Tyrann Mathieu possibly hitting the market, that helps the price on DB Lamarcus Joyner who'd be solid in the slot...

Re: Saints sign Kurt Coleman

I get the idea of trying to get Honey Badger if he gets released but its a no for me.
Fantastic player but i think the money can be used better elsewhere.

Now don't get me wrong I'd be egstatic to see him in a Saints Jersey.

That about sums up how I feel...

With the Honey Badger, think it's a wait and see how his market comes together, then decide as to how much of your cap you can commit...

The Saints know if they trust Ken Crawley there or not - that's the question only the guys in the Saints' sanctum sanctorum know the answer...

Committing that much money to Honey Badger will be a tell about their confidence in Crawley, and as well as their outlook on Del Breaux, P.J. Williams...

Amazing that in just two years, we could have either Breaux or P.J. Williams as our No. 5 cornerback, and that will be before the draft gets here...

Rock on Ireland!!!

He’s been a safety most of his NFL career.

Yeah, I understand that, but his strength is as a cover in the slot...

Look, you really only have three-four guys per position in the NFL, so versatility at multiple positions is where real value is...

Honey Badger was playing safety to likely justify the money committed...

But if you look at recent Cardinals nickel packages, Mathieu is covering in that slot...

He’s like Vacarro. Just way better.

I don’t know how I feel about Coleman though.

Smart, high IQ player. Instinctive like MJenkins was.

Solid depth. Mentor (co captain in Carolina)- > He'll push the young guys. I think Raphael Bush (FA) could be gone.

Nice move by the Saints FO if you ask me. Quality depth (see Philly) is the key here.

If Coleman is healthy, he is good. Period. He will help us. He has very good ball skills. He can cover a TE and most RBs. He can tackle. He's a smart, savvy veteran. Kenny Vaccarro doesn't have any 9 pick seasons. Coleman does and he's not old. He'll look great in Black and Gold! If we could pull off Tyrann Mathieu too.................We can always dream. If we signed Mathieu Id be buyin my first NFL jersey immediatetly. At the NFL combine, Deion Sanders claimed that hands down Tyrann Mathieu had better ball skills than any other player in the draft. Yea. He could be a nice piece. If he's your nickel corner, you're feeling pretty good. In theory don't we hope our starting safeties are Bell ans Williams. Im sold on Marcus Williams. He is awesome. Are we sold on Von Bell?

Major pretty much nailed it - This is a great, great value signing and he's a safety that can give you good coverage...

I was really surprised Coleman chose to sign this early, especially with his starting experience...

Maybe he saw first-hand with the Panthers how close we are to that Superbowl Title?

Playing in the SuperDome in a playoff game can leave an impression...then again, he played at Ohio State -

At 6.5 million this year he better be more than solid depth. I hope his 2017 year was a fluke. I’d still bring back Bush it would provide 4 safeties that could start at any given time. Another spot for BPA in the draft.

Heading into Free Agency, Kurt is the 18th highest paid safety in the NFL. That's a bargain & yes he will see some starter snaps.

Saints FO have yet to go wrong with former Carolina or Ohio State players.

For the stat guys ...

Coleman has been penalized once in 3 years. One time.

I agree, that's disciplined /smart football by Kurt.

If you're talking about Tyrann Mathieu, and if my memory is serving me correctly, Jimmy Graham beat him repeatedly when he was with us.

When considering my memory...

Y'all need to pay attention to that stat that Major cited - it's HUGE...

If you're watching the games, you should know we play more Heavy Nickel than any other package...

In fact, we play it more than any other including what was considered our base set of 4-3 under...

And in short - this is our year - no short-changing it now; we need quality depth for a deep run...

That's why I'm banging the table for front seven and interior line...

We've got the starters across the board, but we know injuries happen...

We had nearly 20 starters, impact players go to IR, and we came within one play of a Championship Game...

You're gonna tell me just one of those 20 couldn't have kept if from coming down to what it did?

That is a lot of coin to spend on for “depth”. And he has knee problems. Another potentially solid player watching from the sidelines.

Kenny Vaccaro won't be back and their skill sets are similar. We run a lot of three safety sets and now we have the depth that will allow us to draft BPA. Initially I wasn't excited abut the signing but he will allow us to hopefully not lose our cohesion in the secondary without KV.

Re: Saints sign Kurt Coleman

New Orleans Saints: The New Orleans Saints acquired a true game-changing talent in Marshon Lattimore with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. The rookie was an immediate lockdown threat and allowed a 48.1 passer rating in coverage, one of the lowest in the NFL last season. The Defensive Rookie of the Year tracked some of the best receivers in the game across the field, proving he can be a top shadow corner. It would be unwise to overlook his running mate, Ken Crawley. The 2016 undrafted free agent emerged as a strong starter in 2017, allowing just 44.6 percent of the throws sent his way to be caught. New Orleans could possibly look to upgrade the slot corner position after allowing the seventh-most (941) yards last year, but they should be fine with P.J. Williams in the slot for another season.

I am still high on them tendering Breaux and placing him at the slot.

Place Delvin on the 90 man roster, then let him compete. He should be 100% healthy for the 1st time in 2 years.

I agree and have faith he will make the 53 roster, who do he have to compete against? I am for the saints drafting or signing a free agent to boost the competition. By no means necessary, I hope they don't move Crawley to nickel. He is better outside plus I am still not confident in his tackling
