Sean Payton: No QB prospects as good as Luck or Wentz in this draft

The Saints own the 27th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, which means they won’t be taking one of the top quarterbacks, which frees coach Sean Payton to speak honestly about those prospects. And Payton isn’t overly impressed.

Payton told Peter King of SI.com that he doesn’t view any of these quarterbacks as the same kind of top-notch prospects that he thought Andrew Luck was heading into the 2012 draft, and Carson Wentz was heading into the 2016 draft.

“I don’t see Luck in this draft, and I don’t see Carson Wentz, who I liked a lot coming into the draft,” Payton said. “I’d feel a little bit uneasy if I were at the top of this draft and I decided I had to have a quarterback. The pressure to get a quarterback is so great in this league, I get that. But we can’t create ’em. I wouldn’t be surprised if only one of these guys is left standing in four or five years, and if so, I’d guess it would be Sam Darnold.”

With the exception of Baker Mayfield, I'm not all that impressed with this QB class...especially Sam Darnold.

No kidding. No idea what the love for Darnold is. A turnover machine unless he cleans up a whole stinky pile of stuff.

It'll be the same QB-less teams that reach for Darnold, Rosen, Jackson, Allen, Mayfield. Mark it now: 1 probably 2 of these QBs will be available at 27. Payton is sad mouthing these guys as part of the art of draft jockeying.

The fact that Payton cited Wentz and Luck says enough. High character guys. Sometimes I don't understand Payton.

In another year Rudolph and Jackson might be top 5 or top 10.

Bottom line, there are not 6 teams that need or can afford to take a QB in round 1.

Be curious to see who drops, ala Marino 1983, Rodgers 2005, and Mr. Bundchen

I don't think we can take any comments as 100% honest this close to the draft. I hope he isn't planning to take any of these quarterbacks, though. I'd rather try to win another SB in the next 1-2 years with Brees, even if it means we have a few years of searching for a replacement when he retires.

Odds are that in five years five out of the six top QB recruits will be no better than average and may have been delegated to back up status ... if still in the league. I agree with what Payton said, whether or not it was straight forward ... none of the QB's in this draft have the no miss flair of an Andrew Luck and Luck hasn't even been tearing it up.

Pretty sure Payton gave Mayfield a pair of those Black Plastic Glasses with the Fake Nose and Mustache to him to wear draft day!!

Sean is investing all his draft picks in the O-line!

So are we trading up to the second pick or something?

Besides Baker Mayfield, the rest of the QB prospects longevity in the league will be determine by the team and coach. Whoever is drafted besides Baker Mayfield to the Browns will have a max longevity in the league of 5 years at the most. Bad coach for a so called named QB whisper coach. Its going to take a QB with a lot of self esteem and dedication to survive the Browns unless the Browns make a move like the Rams. The three QBs left the Rams (Bradford,Foles & Keenum) were hot commodities this offseason and fourth (Goff) resurrected his career. It took the rams leaving ST. Louis to Los Angeles for Eric Dickerson to call out Fisher as a bad coach. Three losing seasons should do it for Hue. With that being said I think our coach is playing chess and hoping Mayfield drop to us or low enough so he can trade up and scoop him up

It's all about where players go and how they're coached. Nobody envisioned Brees would light it up like he did with Payton. Goff looked horrible until McVay came along. Foles has looked great twice in Philly under two Head Coaches and horrible in between. If the Browns take a QB, any QB, it's not going to end well. The organization is just the worst. If Jackson or Mayfield falls to and is chosen by the Saints, they will have the best chance at being great.

I'm in the minority but I really want Jackson. He is a team first player with great character and unbelievably humble. Let him sit a few years behind Brees and he will be ready. I think he is by far the best QB in the draft I just hope he doesn't get drafted by anyone in our division.

DK35 ... anything is possible & I wouldn't rule it out. A lot will depend on how things fall. The Saints want a QB but I haven't read or heard anything specifically linking Jackson to the Saints or his value vs the other "can't miss QB prospects".

Two more days ...

Side note - I'm not sold on Taysom Hill as the future QB in NO. He'll have to show a lot in training camp.

I like Jackson also along with Mayfield, the only problem I have with drafting either is that I want to see Taysom Hill. Only the coaching staff know if Taysom the future. If not, I will be find with Jackson. After last draft I wont be second guessing their choices unless Ditka is seen in the warroom

I wouldn't want us to pick any of the QB's. I want players that will contribute to more Super Bowl wins. There may be the second coming of another great QB in four years or so that can truly take Brees' place. Until then let's pick up players that have a chance of seeing the field on a regular basis. At least Taysom Hill can play special teams. That's all we'll need out of a back-up for the next several years.

I thought about that also. If Brees is still going strong in 4 years a QB that we draft will just be warming the bench and it would turn into a wasted pick.

I wouldn't want to use a number one unless we swung a trade and got back into the 2nd round and picked a need player.
We have the extra mid-late round picks we could package with next year's 2nd. That worked twice, right?
