UCF grabbed national headlines for their three-year turnaround from winless squad to self-proclaimed national champions in 2017. Smith's name appeared on the national radar during the team's undefeated campaign, but his talent has always been there. He was a three-star recruit and Palm Beach Post All-Area pick for two seasons, as well as a district champion in the 400-meter sprint for his high school track team. Several schools around the country offered him, but he stayed in-state to play for UCF. Smith redshirted his first year on campus and was the team's Scout Team Player of the Year.

In 2015, American Athletic Conference coaches named him the league's Rookie of the Year after catching 52 passes for 724 yards and four touchdowns on a winless team. He started all 13 games in 2016, leading UCF with 57 receptions for 852 yards and five scores as the team crept into respectability. He completed his career in Orlando with a first-team all-conference junior campaign, starting all 13 games and covering 1,171 yards and scoring 13 times on 59 catches. With head coach Scott Frost heading back to Nebraska after the season, Smith decided it was time to try his luck at the next level.

With the 91st overall pick in the third round of this year's NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints selected wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith from Central Florida.

The Saints added to the defense in the first round on Thursday, and with their second pick of the draft on Friday night (April 27), they found another weapon for quarterback Drew Brees.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Smith had exceptional production for the Golden Knights in 2017 with 59 receptions for 1,171 yards and 13 touchdowns. His average of 19.8 yards per reception is an indication of his big-play ability.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Smith ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds and had a 37.5-inch vertical leap.

HEIGHT: 6’1”
WEIGHT: 210 pounds
40 YD DASH: 4.49 seconds
BENCH PRESS: 12 reps
VERTICAL JUMP: 37.5”
BROAD JUMP: 130.0”
3 CONE DRILL: 6.97 seconds
20 YD SHUTTLE: 4.5 seconds
2017 STATS: 59 rec, 1,171 yds, 19.8 avg, 13 td
Tre’Quan Smith may hands down be the most underrated receiver in this year’s draft. As someone who watched him play his entire career, I can tell you he’s one of the most clutch, reliable receivers in the game. With a year of eligibility left, Smith decided to declare early after his redshirt junior season, amassing 2,748 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns throughout his career.

Out of the 49 wide receivers at this year’s combine, Smith had the 14th fastest 40 time and the 3rd longest broad jump. Here’s how his combine results compare to some of the NFL’s best.

Scouting says he's very good at slowing down and tracking under thrown deep balls. Happens time to time with Brees as much as I hate to say it.

4. Name a WR and a TE projected to go on Day 3 that you're higher on than most.

Hribar: At receiver, I'll go with Tre'Quan Smith. He's a prototypical flanker in the NFL who improved every season at UCF, averaging 13.9, 15.0, and a staggering 19.9 yards per catch over the past three season. He also displayed some efficiency in 2017 to go along with all of that splash play production, posting a 68.6 catch rate to go along with that gaudy yardage per catch. A long-armed, vertical speedster with a track background, Smith has an instant trump card in his pocket upon entering the league to build off honing in the rest of his game.

The biggest knock on him is that he played in a very small division.

Colston says hello.

And what SEC team did the undefeated National Champions UCF team beat again in the bowl game to remain undefeated?

Are we thinking the long term replacement for Tedd Ginn or his future in the slot

I'm kind of surprised he didn't go earlier. I like the move. I hope the young man makes the transition.

Coleman on a 1yr deal. This kid looks like a younger, faster version.

I got mad the last time we picked a receiver.

“What do we need this guy from Ohio State for? I’ve never even heard of him. Take Curtis Samuel!”

Yeah...I’m just going to shut up and say I’m pleased with the selection. We usually know what we’re doing at WR.

He's a jump ball specialist. Brees is a jump ball throwing specialist.

Re: Saints pick UCF receiver Tre'Quan Smith in 3rd round

I read a piece a few weeks back about the biggest issue with rookie receivers is learning the complexity of the NFL passing game.

If he has the smarts to learn the offense, read the defense and run the routes, Brees will make him great.

Re: Saints pick UCF receiver Tre'Quan Smith in 3rd round

A long strider who doesn't look as fast as his time indicates. A top ender. Reminds me of how a young Deuce ran. He didn't look like he was running fast yet he was leaving DB's in his wake.

That probably explains why he gets deep on DB's so often.

Re: Saints pick UCF receiver Tre'Quan Smith in 3rd round

If he can track a deep ball well and block too, great. The Saints really need a receiver who can get some YAC yards. Break a tackle, shake a guy, whatever and turn a short curl into a big gain. I'm still hoping Travin Dural can get his legs back after his horrific injury in college.

I'm with ya! I see I become pessimistic when it comes to the draft but after the last draft we have to be optimistic

Is there locker room issues with TG Jr we're not aware of?

We didn't need a WR unless Meredith got hurt. We needed a TE but we had no second round pick.

Noticed that too. Catches really well in traffic & away from his body. Add 38" vert & 4.4 long speed.

Another interesting stat on Tre'quan...

He was the fastest WR (top end speed) at the combine. Ain't nobody chasing this cat down from behind.

I love those clips of him blocking downfield. That's the kind of hustle that will spring Kamara or Ingram for a 60 yard scamper and a TD.

Re: Saints pick UCF receiver Tre'Quan Smith in 3rd round

This dude gonna have to show me. I see decent hands, ball skills and some good route running. Gets open deep some, rarely breaks a tackle through. He
seems to be a willing blocker. On the plus side he does a little of everything and looks like an all around solid receiver. I like the UDFA WR from Temple much better. Kirkwood I think. He looks like a Mike Thomas clone. If you could line up 2 Mike Thomas's, wouldn't you do it?

What a stupid thing to say! He was drafted in the third round.....we had to give up this years second in the trade. Get your facts right or just keep it to yourself. :argue:
