New Orleans Saints OTAs 22-24 May 2018

Notes and observations from Thursday's organized team activity.

ATTENDANCE: Tight end Ben Watson, guard Andrus Peat, running back Mark Ingram and wide receiver Brandon Coleman were not present. Cam Jordan appeared to have the day off.

THE BIG NEWS: The most crucial piece of information from each organized team activity is who is participating and who is not...Anzalone and Armstead did not appear to be limited in any form. Meredith and Okafor did not seem to participate in team drills.

Linebacker A.J. Klein and running back Daniel Lasco were present during the session. It appeared both just did conditioning work and then observed practice.

FLEXIBILITY: The Saints have a lot of defensive ends, perhaps more than they’ve had in a long time. So, it was interesting to see Hau’oli Kikaha take some repetitions at strongside linebacker. He played the position as a rookie but moved to defensive end in his second season...

A NEW SAFETY: The team called Kamrin Moore a cornerback after selecting him in the draft. That might ultimately end up where he plays, but Moore was posted up at safety during Thursday’s practice. He looked good, too. His highlight moment came when he intercepted a J.T. Barrett pass over the middle.

New Orleans has some good depth the position. The first-teamers on Thursday were Marcus Williams and newcomer Kurt Coleman. Vonn Bell, who changed to jersey number 24, got his reps with the second team.

FLASHING: We were robbed of seeing how Mitchell Loewen’s strong offseason translated to meaningful games since his season ended prematurely due to injury. But he was flashing again on Thursday, with a few good rushes, including one sack. It’s easy to forget how much potential Loewen has, and the positive impression he has consistently made, due to him missing most of his first two seasons due to injury.

BACKED UP: It’s hard to get a proper evaluation...when no one is wearing pads. So, any comments on how the running backs looked are premature...only things that stood out...few good cuts by Jonathan Williams and Boston Scott showed some ability to catch the ball...had two catches on screens and another on a curl...

TAYSOM: ...Hill...had some good moments on Thursday, with the highlight being when he dropped a deep pass down the sideline into the arms of wide receiver Eldridge Massington...also threaded a pass into a tight window to Paul Turner. Hill flashed the ability to throw on the run, and you got to see his speed when he flushed out the pocket and took off running.

PUNT TEAM: Alvin Kamara, Tommylee Lewis, Ted Ginn and Scott fielded punts.

CHANGED UP: It looks like Dan Arnold, a wide receiver last year, got some work at tight end.

PICKED OFF: Patrick Robinson...got his No. 21 jersey back and showed up with an interception on a deep pass down the field..New Orleans could have a solid group of corners if Robinson plays like he did last season for the Eagles.

FIGHT CLUB: Not sure what happened, or who the fights were with, but David Onyemata got into a few dust-ups during the practice and had to be held back once.

GOOD ROOK: Saw rookie defensive end Marcus Davenport get pressure at least once. He had some good moments ... working against Armstead...without pads, it’s hard to get a good evaluation.

Would love to see a fit Anzalone. Liked the look of him early last season.

Re: New Orleans Saints OTAs 22-24 May 2018

Chris Hagan made a great observation on the show earlier about how rookies really don't get a break in their first year in the NFL...

Collegiate Bowl Game

Senior Bowl Game

NFL Combine

NFL Draft

Rookie Mini-Camp

Full Team OTAs

Specifically Chris Hagan was responding to an Eric Asher question about players to watch in camp and Hagan was referring to DE Trey Hendrickson ...

Trey Hendrickson aggravated a previous injury early in camp last year and really never had a chance for his body to rest, recover despite flashing last year...

Les East said he was impressed with how well-spoken Damario Davis was and how he carried himself in interviews and his football knowledge...

Both felt there's going to be some really tough cuts at linebacker and that Taysom Hill is one impressive athlete...

Reaffirmation doesn't hurt though - as the Saints beat writer said. This is more of a convocation of the team to see what we have, get a baseline on faces and health...

I for one and glad to see the Big Guy get comfortable and begin to assert himself - now if he can only do that in his play...

If Onyemata starts to play with a real mean streak then watch out Rankins.

Why do people think Rankins is in jeopardy. If Onyemata plays better then Rankins is a better statistical season. It’s not like he hasn’t had an impact.

I don’t think Rankins is in jeopardy. I’m just excited about seeing how high Onyemata’s ceiling really is. He has very limited football experience and if he’s starting to really get a grasp of the game AND play with a mean streak... It’ll be hard to keep him off the field.
