Why don't we have players like this?
You know....I really don\'t know what side of the fence to stand on. There\'s the side that says that you should honor your contract no matter what(ala the Eagles), but how can you ask someone to restructure their contract to benefit the cap if you aren\'t willing to restructure their contract to benefit THEM if the situation arises????
I guess I\'m of the belief that you should be allowed to have your contract redone if you consistently overacheive, provided the team is in a place to do so without jeapordizing the cap situation. I believe that slowly but surely we are getting some of the high character guys that are willing to do things like this, like Will Smith. |

With as many high profile guys getting cut because of salary cap problems his taking a pay cut may have nothing to do with being such a stand up looking team player -- just a thought

Good point 4saints, but that begs the question, are our guys above feeling like they will be cut even if their performance is declining or they have not achieved to a certain level? Whatever Quarles\' reason, he is taking one for the team. Do we have ANY players that would do that?

Come on now... if that were to happen in New Orleans, hell would freeze over.

Gandy\'s sallary, if I recall correctly, is around the 5.5 mil mark. I think he should restructure. Problem is, is may still be the best tackle on the team.

Also, as I understand it, Horn did just restructure. It must be getting pretty cold in hell?

He\'s 34 and reportedly slowing down. Gandy immediately comes to my mind. He\'s scheduled to make $5.25M this year. I doubt he\'s going to be willing to take a cut, but I think he\'s overpaid. Anyone else fit the description? Bellamy maybe, but he was just re-signed. |
Why don't we have players like this?
Problem is that our players are not in danger of getting cut for salary cap reasons -- Gandy should but why would he ===

Why don't we have players like this?
Actually, with only about 1 mil in cap space, and a need to have 3.8 mil to sign our rookies this year, I suppose it is quite possilbe someone might get cut to make room. In fact, this is a large reason that Pathon is no longer on the team.

Cut Gandy, go with Stinch and let the fur fly.
Also Kool, as you know, Joe had one year left on his contract and was demanding a new one. Not the ssme with Quarles. He has 3 seasons left on his deal and was in no position to demand anything new. He also isn\'t a pro bowler so I don\'t see how he would have had a reason to demand a new deal. Yet he took a cut. I think hell is pretty safe from freezing over here at this point. Add to that Quarles actually took a PAY CUT, unlike Joe horn. Joe got MORE money, the cap hit was just spread over more years. Not at all the same. [Edited on 28/4/2005 by saintswhodi] |

Joe has been our top WR atop WR in the NFL and has shown no signs of slowing down. I don\'t think Joe\'s situation corresponds at all to Quarles.
I agree about cutting Gandy and going with Stinch. I just don\'t see how he could THAT much worse than Gandy has been. |
Why don't we have players like this?
Agreed Scotty.

Why don't we have players like this?
Point taken on Horn.
As for cutting Gandy, I say hell no. Gandy was hardly that bad last year. I\'d like to see some stats before I make a final call on that, but Gandy is way better than an unproven player IMO. He may be slowing down, but he was a pro-bowler. Even if he is slower, he still has all the skills, knowledge, and vetran savvy. Not to mention being a POSITIVE locker-room presence. Cutting Gandy would be foolish, IMO. Getting him to restructure sounds just fine with me. It still won\'t be enough. |

Good point Kool and I should have clarified. If Gandy restructures, I am fine. But if they ask him to and he says no, I would cut him. Nothing but good reports about Stinch getting stronger during the offseason. We take a shot. Gandy is regressing. That means more than likely this year will be worse than last year. I would rather start a player whose career is going up than one whose is obviously going down, seemingly right before our eyes. But I will say again, if he restructures, great. Keep him.

Here\'s a thought...
We\'ve got about 1 million under the cap. Cut Gandy now... 6 million. Sign our rookies... 2 million. Restructure Howard\'s contract... 7 million. Sign Simon... 3 million. Work with Bentley and McKenzie on long-term deals. Watch out for a move with Brooks next offseason (another 6 mill for Deuce :) ) |
Why don't we have players like this?
It costs almost 4 mil to sign our rookies.
I think Brooks will be moved for cap reasons next year (unless he shows us something or we have no options). |
Why don't we have players like this?
Whodi, I think we agree.
I\'m not really for cutting him either way, but I can see as how this might help our cap situation some. Of course, we won\'t save his whole contract value, due to his accelerated bonus cost. As of now, he is the best proven tackle on the roster, a Left Tackle no less. I\'m sure he\'s still worth about 3 mil (let\'s get him to restructure to that). |
Why don't we have players like this?
If we can Kool, I am all for it. If he flat out refuses, bye bye Gandyman.
|
Why don't we have players like this?
Quarles said he was a team player and consider the team first. Unfortunately, the Saints do not have enough players with this character trait.
