Jamal Charles visiting with the saints today

Sean Payton didn't specifically confirm that veteran RB Jamaal Charles is scheduled to visit the Saints on Wednesday. But when asked about Tim Hightower's three-day tryout during veteran minicamp and Charles' reported visit, Payton said, "If we work anyone out here in the next few days, it would be just to see what kind of shape they're in, see how they're doing. It doesn't preclude us from signing someone, but it's pretty normal." Payton said earlier this offseason that the Saints didn't immediately plan to sign a veteran RB to fill in during Mark Ingram's four-game suspension. But that does increase the need to have an updated "short list" at the position.

To me it sounds like one of two things, either he is really unhappy with MI or the backups don’t appear to be up the task. Also read Tim Hightower was brought in.

Wasn't Hightower successful here before on a short stint?

31 years old & plagued with injuries.

I'm more interested in what we already have on the roster ... Jonathan W, Scott & Edmunds.

depth is good

get thru camp and see what the rookies do, and if you aren't satisfied, these guys are a phone call away

Based on last contracts. both would sign for vet minimum

Reports say Saints reached out to Demarco Murry but he declined the invitation. He apparently wasn't interested in being part of a RB group...https://247sports.com/nfl/new-orlean...tion-119017905

Need insurance. Not sign them but know what is out there. Before Ingram, forget how many RB's we lost but it was bad.

I could easily fill in the Running Back spot for a few games except:
1) I live in England.
2) I am the wrong side of fifty
3) I am overweight
4) I am out of shape
5) My left knee can't take much more
6) It's unlikely I would be able to understand the playbook
7) I have never played a down in my life
8) I have Sciatica
9) I lack any discernable talent

Apart from these niggles, I am ready to Rock and Roll!

Ahhh! You've got me by a decade! Need an agent?

This is like AP. 5 years ago it would have been a good idea.

Either we had no confidence in anyone behind Kamara or there is a plan to entertain shopping Ingram before he returns. I think it is the later. If a team is desperate enough they could over value him. Say it's a 2nd and another conditional pick, that would be hard to turn down IMO. Bundle those with something else and get back in the 1st. I just don't see us going into next year without a plan to get that 1st back.

Or, more likely, Payton wants to make sure all of his bases are covered. We learned a few years back that it's better to have more than enough options at RB rather than not having enough. Ingram is a proven commodity that fits the offense perfectly. It makes no sense whatsoever to weaken the team when we are clearly in a win now mode.

I would love for him to pick us to resign a free agent contract anyway. With Drews age creeping up we need a consistent running game to keep him from having to throw 35 plus times a game.
