Schonert to use 2-Read/dump/run for AB
From Max's recap on SR...
Its a recap of the UPN Saint's draft. Nothing earth shattering but a couple topics worth noting. The offense will now use a 2-Read, Safety-valve dump-off, then Run approach instead of the 4 read/dump/run they were previously using. I thought it was kinda interesting. Schonert said the 4-read/dump/run took too long and resulted in too many sacks. Before anyone jumps on AB for this, Steve Young said they used the 2 check/dump/run approach also. As well as the Denver Broncos. Also, Haz said Stinchcomb is gonna give Gandy a run for starting LT. |

Interesting... The Saints have said they will put the 2 best tackles on the field no matter who it was. I wouldn\'t mind seeing Stinch supplant Gandy... he definately has the size.
And whatever the 2 safety pump valve dump off that is ;) , I hope it works well. |

Nice find. If Stinch really is up there A) bye bye or pay cut Gandy B) no need to go T early next year in the draft so we can get a stud LB and C) he will no longer be counted as a wasted pick. I love it.
Also on the offense, not gonna knock AB, I just hope it works. Some of these changes are sounding good, or at least better than the old BS we used to hear. |

Quote:
1. There\'s now 2 primary downfield reads instead of four, presumably the WR\'s and/or a TE. 2. If those two are covered, dump off to a safety valve, typically a RB/FB/TE (please, no Gandy jokes). 3. If all that is covered, RUN like hell! |

This good news. Honestly ,I suspected that the brass was limiting AB from scrambling. Some would blame him for standing in the pocket too long, doing check downs. That isn\'t AB\'s game. I\'d like to see AB scramble more.
I think the knock on Stinch was simply strength, not size. I remember seeing him get trucked by LBs, thinking \"OMG. Make this boy a TE.\" |

Interesting -- It should really help AB put up better numbers -- I think he rarely used the 4 reads though -- lots of times he would try to thread the needle -- of course one could argue he did not have enough time to read all 4

I\'ve never been a fan of over-complicating anything. Especially not NFL offenses and defenses.
As bad as our offensive line was last year, the 2-read/dumpoff/run approach would have been beneficial. It would have decreased the time the O-line had to pass block. And since we\'re talking about dump-off passes here. With the addition of Mayberry and Jammal Brown, we should be able to run an effective screen-pass!!!! Without having defenders in our backfield!! And by limiting the number of sacks (46 last year) we shouldn\'t be in a lot of 3rd and long situations. Oh, yeah ... and without all those false start penalties from Victor Riley. It should be interesting to see our offense when they\'re in situations where the opposing defense don\'t know what they are going to run. It ain\'t exactly hard to figure out if its a run or a pass when you\'re 3rd and 15. And anytime you\'re in 3rd and short, having a great offensive line and a great runningback come in very handy. Nice info Danno.
They seem to be adjusting to some of their tendencies to clutter up the offense. Toss the encyclopedia out and cut down on the reads....both seem like solid ideas. We were rarely getting past the 2nd read anyway :) |

4-read/dump/run
Hmmmmmmm, Maybe that explains the fumbles. He would have to drop the ball to continue counting on his other hand. Know i\'m gonna catch hell for this but I couldn\'t resist. [Edited on 30/4/2005 by RockyMountainSaint] |

I expect one of our tightends will have a breakout year... HOPEFULLY. *fingers-crossed* Denver had Shannon Sharpe... 49ers had Brent Jones... hopefully with this simplified scheme, one of our tightends can make a name for themselves.

If anything...this at the very least shows they are walking into this season with a well thought out plan of attack...
I myself think a two check is a tad few...maybe a 3 would be more effective...but..I do not make Offenses...I just gripe about them... There is really no reason to think that we cannot run the Division this year...and possibly the NFC...Playoffs or bust... Even though this is a newer Offense..it is a simplified one...it shouldn\'t be hard for our Veterans to pick it up and run with it...I like the idea of letting Deuce control the majority of the Offense\'s fate.... I still question the Defense..but..have high hopes...the F.A. period was one of the better ones in recent memory...and we actually got big time guys ..not just role players...maybe a reduction of Venturi\'s influence will go a long way towards success this year... It\'s almost scary how proficiently the team seems to have improved...I just hope it translates to good play on the field... |

Amen Billy. How long has this aspect of our offense been lacking? Seems like since Dalton was here. [Edited on 30/4/2005 by RockyMountainSaint] |

I personally would love to see Stinch beat out Gandy at LT.
I never liked the Gandy move in the first place. We paid him a lot when we couldn\'t come to an agreement with Turley b/c we needed a guy and we had already put a lot of money aside. Gandy wasn\'t even the LT that Turley was and he is much older. I thought that was a bad move. I was surprised in his first year when his play didn\'t hurt us more. It caught up in year 2. Putting Stinch in at LT and Brown in at RT won\'t necessarily mean our T play get a whole lot better this year. BUT, it would give us a young talented line with a bright future - especially if we can keep them together. And we could restructure or cut Gandy and free up $5 million in cap room immediately. |

Turley was horrible at LT. He looked worse than Folau. Gandy in 2007 would be a better LT than Turleys best season. I\'d love to see Stinch win the spot also. Gandy is aging and if Stinchcomb\'s conditioning reports are accurate, he just may overtake Gandy. If not, both stinch and Gandy would still be better than Turley ever was (at LT). To his credit, Turley was a good RT, but got flat embarrassed as a LT. |

Gandy was considered the one of the best LTs available in FA the year we got him.
People are simply way too down on the guy. He\'s no Roaf, that is for sure, but we were spoiled with Roaf here. The reason that we paid Gandy as much as we did, and it really isn\'t that much for a pro-bowl LT, is because we had to bid for him in FA. I\'d be happy to see Stinchcomb finally pay off, and I agree Gandy is WAY overpaid for what he can provide now, but Gandy is still a good LT. |

Quick somone needs to send in the play diagram for the screen pass. It\'s been so long since the Saints could run one I bet it isn\'t even in the playbook anymore. Oh by the way if the offense can learn to run one maybe...and I say just maybe...the defense can learn to stop one?? You think it could happen?

.. I see... so they don\'t want to be like the Rams anymore, and now they are going to imitate the Falcons offense... |

Sorry guys but I\'m not convinced re-inventing the wheel is gonna help Aaron Brooks. One major problem with him is his inability to throw \"touch\" passes and there are few passes in the game that require more touch than a dump-off pass. Many of you forget Brooks has always had trouble leading a receiver unless it\'s on a post pattern. How many times have we seen AB throw above, behind and below a receiver? Nothing makes me think that\'s gonna change any time soon.
BTW, screen passes require a great deal of \"touch\" as well and frankly Brooks is so far incapable of completing them with any consistency. It\'s gonna take a lot of practice time. Hopefully the elimination of two extra reads will afford Brooks more time to complete these types of passes but I\'m skeptical. |
