Saints vs Jaguars Game Day Thread

The New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars figure to get a brief look at their revamped ground games when they face off in their preseason opener at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Saints running backs Shane Vereen and Terrance West are trying to prove they can fill in for Pro Bowl starter Mark Ingram, who will serve a four-game suspension to start the regular season.

Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette dropped more than 15 pounds since the start of last season and will have a retooled line with All-Pro left guard Andrew Norwell.

"I feel healthier," said Fournette, down to 223 pounds thanks partly to 50 push-ups a night. "I want to be great. That is my weight I felt best in college."

Hey, has anybody been at training camp? I want to know why Davis is playing the WILL LB spot instead of the MIKE. Is Manti Te’o balling out that hard? I really hope so.

Linebacker feedback from Coach Nolan starts around 5:20. It doesn't address your specific question but it appears he wants to evaluate everyone at different spots before the season opener.

Here's what happening, and you'll have to pardon the use of the basketball analogy to football linebackers; the answer you seek, in a word - matchups...

From week to week, the linebacker roles will change based on the opponent...

Plus, have it on good authority, that (knock on wood) should Anzalone and Davis stay healthy, they will see the most snaps of all the linebackers...

And the reason for that previous statement is that we will be running a lot of nickel, half CB-nickel (Robinson), half S(Heavy)-nickel (Bell)...

And that's why those linebackers will be the two in there the most...

Outside linebackers will have most of the responsibility for the flats, shifted from the cornerbacks...

League is a 60/40 passing league now and the nickel is essentially the base package now...

Because of Davis' and Anzalone's speed, they will cover running backs, even slot receivers coming their way in motion, out in those flats...

The CBs are basically staying back, knocking down the long throws...
