Saints cut cornerback De'Vante Harris
 

De'Vante Harris had a promising start to his New Orleans Saints career as he made the roster as an undrafted rookie in 2016, but two years later, his time with the team has ended.

The Saints waived Harris on Saturday, according to a league source. The move comes just two days after the first preseason game in which Harris had two coverage penalties, an unfortunately fitting end to a two-year Saints career marred by mishaps in games.

The 25-year-old Harris appeared in 10 games as a rookie and 11 games in 2017 before finishing the season on the practice squad.

Harris was a popular guy in the Saints' locker room and particularly close with fellow cornerback Ken Crawley, who also made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2016. However, with the Saints building their depth at cornerback by signing Patrick Robinson and drafting Natrell Jamerson, as well as the improvement from Arthur Maulet this summer, the team decided to move on from Harris.

I was surprised he lasted this long after his performances to start last season.

Has there been any explanation by the coaches why he started those games last season?!

I wish him luck, but he really struggled every time I saw him on the field. Maybe it was the scheme we run, who know? He might be ok in a Tampa 2 cover scheme. If Tampa even runs that anymore. Either way, I'd love to see Tre run past him and score a TD on a deep post.

Drew knows Harris' tendencies...if he's out there week 1, especially as a starter like we did last season Drew will torch him or get penalties all the way down to the goal line.

I'm hopeful Arthur Maulet takes advantage of the opportunity. Undersized but tough & scrappy like his positional coach Aaron Glenn was as a player.

Just glancing around the league, there are a few undrafted corners who have capitalized & are playing at a high level... Chris Harris Jr., Malcolm Butler, Ken Crawley, A. J. Bouye just to name a few.

Maybe Maulet makes a leap? To be continued...

Harris never impressed me. However, I really like Maulet's skill set and attitude.

Harris should fit right in with Tampa and their losing record. I don't think he'll stick around there but he might. Tampa has a strong roster but poor management and coaching.

He had a long history of underwhelming play. After game one's penalties it was an easy cut and the right message.
