New Orleans Saints defensive end Alex Okafor left practice after suffering an injury during Wednesday's practice.

The extent of the injury is unknown.

Okafor had looked good in training camp as he returns from the torn Achilles tendon that ended his 2017 season, and teammates were visibly concerned after Okafor went down.

"It sucks for a guy coming back from the injury that he just came back from," left tackle Terron Armstead said. "I know the feeling. Being hit with things back to back, it's a lot mentally, maybe even more than physically, sometimes."

Despite the addition of first-round pick Marcus Davenport, Okafor was projected as the starter at right defensive end after racking up 43 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season before the injury.

"Praying for him," Armstead said. "I'm going to go check on him when we go back inside, hopefully he's alright."

I hate to speculate like this, but if it does indeed end up being season-ending for Okafor then I have to imagine Kikaha and Jayrone Elliot just got a whole lot more job security as Sam LB/sub-package DE’s.

Is it just me or does it seem odd that Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter seem to get the reports from the Saints faster than our own local boys?

Its plausible that the League might want to preview all news before it goes public, and it could make it to the national media before some locals.

The NFL is a marketing/reputation machine these days and with email and txt they can easily vet all news quickly.

A “week or so” would be on the most optimistic end of the spectrum of recovery times for an ankle sprain. If this is accurate, then this is huge news for the Saints. That would mean Okafor would be ready to go for the start of the regular season on Sept. 9.
