The New Orleans Saints are about to get their first-round pick back on the field.

Marcus Davenport, whom the Saints traded up to the No. 14 pick to select in April's draft, participated in practice for the first time during Saturday's walk-through.

Davenport has missed the past three weeks with a pulled groin muscle, but he's getting back into action in time for the important joint practices against the Chargers in Costa Mesa, California, this week, as well as his first preseason action next Saturday night.

"I anticipate him being able to work this week and getting some playing time," Saints coach Sean Payton said.

Davenport also stuck around after the walk-through on Saturday to get in individual work with defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen and a few other Saints defensive linemen.

For the better part of the past three weeks, Davenport hasn't been present at practice, so Saturday's work represented a milestone.

"Hopefully, this week we'll be able to get him back up and moving around," Payton said.

Once healthy, the rookie has a chance to get a lot of work with the first team. Veteran Alex Okafor, the likely starter at right defensive end opposite Cameron Jordan, suffered a bone bruise in his knee and a sprained ankle last week, leaving a lot of chances for Davenport to get work against veteran left tackle Terron Armstead.

New Orleans is not worried about Davenport knowing the scheme. But the rookie has a lot of catching up to do as far as learning the speed of the game, refining his technique and pad level and getting ready for the actual physical battle of going against NFL offensive tackles.

"The assignment, he'll know," Payton said. "He's been practicing in the meetings. It's just making sure he's 100 percent, but I anticipate that happening this week."

Hated this selection on a number of levels:

Two first round picks for one player NOT a franchise quarterback...

Pressure on this kid to meet the justified expectations for such an investment...

Hasn't had a physical break to allow for adequate recovery from the Bowl Game - Senior Bowl - Combine - ProDay - Draft schedule...

Jumping from a third-tier collegiate competition level to the NFL...

Little to no drop-off in talent still on board had Saints stayed at their slot...

Nonetheless, he's a Saint and now we're playing the patience game with him to adequately recover from the inevitable physical break-down from all these factors...

Brees getting close to riding off in the sunset. If not for that no way we reach for Davenport. I don't expect much from him until late in the season.

Did Cam Jordan kill it his first season?

No, but Cam Jordan is not the typical NFL pass rusher. He had to adapt a pass-rushing style that fit with his strengths. There are several of pass rushers that come into the league and had a good first season. I know a lot of people are nervous about Davenport, but I just feel very comfortable with him coming in and producing. He just has a good feel about him and I think people are going to be excited about what we have once he finds the field and starts producing.

He’ll have an immediate impact, but Trey Hendrickson is going to push for those minutes.

One first round pic.

That's still two first round picks, one guy...

Not all first round picks are created equally. A high first round pick is worth far, far more than a late first rounder. According to the Jimmy Johnson draft value chart the #1 pick (3000) is worth more than SIX times what the #32 pick (590) is valued.

According to the same chart the Saints moved the #27 pick (680) and the future 2019 pick which can be as low as #32 (590) and the 2018 #147 pick (32.2) for the 2018 #14 pick (1100). The relative values would be 1300.2 for 1100. Since New Orleans was the franchise initiating the deal it is expected to be a bit on the lower value end. All in all it isn't a bad deal at all, especially if Davenport pans out to be a top end edge rusher.

When Brees does eventually ride off to the sunset then our defense should be able to carry us while we find his replacement. Although, if Brees plays several more years we will have a lot of contracts coming due and will need to pony up the money to keep our defense together.

However, if we can draft a rookie QB who will play on his first contract, then we don't have to look at free agents on the open market or make some Mickey Loomis extravagant type of trade, then we will have the capital to keep the unit intact.

A rookie QB benefits by having a strong defense(along with the O-line of course).

Agreed. Good Point. I hear ya. Am with you on the points values as well...

But Ryan Ramczyk was a late first rounder, but a first round pick with a fifth year option nonetheless...

How many teams would like to re-draft just the 2017 first round picks alone. I'd bet Ramczyk goes in the first sixteen...

Those first round picks are huyuge!!! And I'd taken Ramczyk over Davenport seven days a week and three times on Sunday...

With this trade I expect Drew back next year and possibly the following. If they thought he would retire or not re-sign they would of never made this trade.

One thing about Payton is that when he trades up for a guy, minus Von Bell, it tends to work out.

He BETTER contribute given what we gave for him. He needs to be as close to a sure thing as it gets. So far we have nothing.

Why exactly are you putting the responsibility on the player to be productive because of decisions that the front office and Payton made relative to the player. Davenport didn't engineer the trade. Davenport would have been picked in the mid teens regardless with exactly the same talent level he has now. So I see it that the Saints organization has ther responsibility to give Davenport the support and coaching necessary to justify the trade.

We saw exactly the same thing when the Saints jumped back into the first round to draft Ingram. A lot of folks were blaming the player for not having production to match the trade. It's taken some time, but I think we can all agree that Ingram's gotten there.

That was really what I was saying. For the FO own good he better be a pretty sure thing. No reflection on the player unless he’s just lazy or a problem

He'll likely deliver late in the season when we need it. Both playoff games looked liked carbon copies of hoping and praying we stop the hail mary's. We did stop one of them but barely. Pass rush sucked down the stretch. It was a void that had to be dealt with or die trying.

Completely agree with post #17 (SaintFanInATLHell).

I'm already prepared for the premature Davenport "suck" thread when he doesn't get 6.5 sacks, 2 FF, pick six, passing TD & win the 2020 Democratic Nomination for Presidency in week 1.

The bias against certain players on this board is usually immediate after drafting them just like my man Mark Ingram. It's either Davenport shut them up Day 1 or he'll forever being a polarizing character.

Trey has really looked good @ camp & in subsequent pre season games. In limited snaps, he has consistently beat the man in front of him. I could completely off base here but I believe the D LINE will be the strength of our defense for 2018.

Coaches will have to unfortunately cut some good talent in the trenches.
