Okafor And Davenport Back In Action

https://saintswire.usatoday.com/2018...-back-somehow/

The New Orleans Saints opened up joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, with a couple of surprises. Rookie first round pick Marcus Davenport was suited up in pads and helmet for his first real day of practice in weeks, but so was last year’s starter, Alex Okafor.

Okafor exited practice last Wednesday – literally just a week ago – with what was initially feared to be a torn ACL. Scans and tests later revealed a much, much more optimistic scenario: a bruised bone in his knee and a sprained ankle. The thought was that Okafor would miss some time, but aim to be ready for the regular season opener.

That idea got turned on its head when Okafor walked up to the Saints-Chargers practice in full pads, ready for action. Either one of his injuries could sideline a player for weeks, so it’s startling to see him return so soon. Remember, this comes after he already spent the last year rehabbing a torn Achilles tendon in his other leg. Hopefully he hasn’t rushed back too soon.

With Hendrickson showing talent for rushing off the edge, there is no need for a rush to judgement for with Okafor or Davenport. Cam Jordan for example is going into his 8th season with the Saints. The NFL regular season is always a war of attrition. It's more important to be healthy and productive than anything else. So if it take a bit more time for these two to get 100%, then give them that time early in the season so that they'll all be geared up for the stretch run in November and December. We literally have 4 division games in the last 5 or 6 weeks of the season. If you can't play then because you rushed back for week 1, then it could be a wasted opportunity.

If we can stay healthy then we should have a decent rotation at RDE this year and we can even rotate Jordan with good depth.

One of the best things this defense has shown over the course of 2 preseason games is the ability to stop the run, with or without Okafor. It’s encouraging that other players are stepping up given the fact that our run defense looked like it could have become a liability when Okafor went down last year. Don’t rush him.
