The New Orleans Saints are losing ground to the Atlanta Falcons by the most-important metric of success: concessions prices. Officials representing Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday announced plans plans to further reduce the NFL’s most-affordable offerings by as much as 12-percent.

Hot dogs, bags of popcorn, and bottomless soft drinks remain $2 each. Pizzas by the slice will cost you just $3. The bigger price costs will affect bratwurst and specialty burgers ($8), as well as chili cheese fries ($9), and a free-range fried chicken sandwich ($10). Atlanta-area craft beer will go for just $5 12-ounce drafts or $7 20-ounce drafts. The Falcons don’t have a Lombardi trophy or any Super Bowl banners to gild their home field, but they know how to get fans in line for food and drink.

Other venues are taking notice. The Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens each rolled out new cost-effective menus, as well as a number of big-time college football stadiums like Texas’s Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium. It’s a downright revolution that’s turning into massive profits – Atlanta’s total concessions sales went up 53-percent, with fans spending 16-percent more from the year before.

That’s something the Mercedes-Benz Superdome officials should learn from. I won’t buy a single $10 beer on a Saints gameday, but I’d happily buy three $5 drinks. The last game I went to with my brother cost us $22 for a shared personal-pan pizza and two bottled waters. A buddy and his dad recently spent $42 on seafood nachos and two soft drinks in souvenir cups. That’s insanity.

And the food is great, as it should be in New Orleans. But there’s no reason for me to not drop $10 at a cart and leave with a bowl of jambalaya and a craft beer. Any result other than that – the one we’re living in right now – is backwards thinking. Hopefully the Superdome administrators will quickly take notice and make the Saints gameday experience even better.

Concessions at the dome are down right draconian.
In this city there is no reason on earth why the Dome shouldn’t provide everything from concessions to upscale chef inspired menu items.
Wait, there is a reason, they are called Center Plate.

Still don't understand why local foods aren't served instead of the more mundane stadium foods. Who wouldn't want a little red beans and rice or jumbalaya, or some étouffe or something?

I'm too embarrassed to say how much I spent for beer the last game I went to. It was insane! And it was just bud light. Which I would've happily choked down if it wasn't so ****ing expensive!!!

On game day I fly to Atlanta and get my concessions! For some reason I always CHOKE!

Things I like about the falcons...leading 28-3 and somehow losing the SB...this is all I like about the falcons.

PS- in no way should that lead to an increase in pricing..matter of fact the team owed the fans free food for a season
