Saints sign veteran running back Mike Gillislee
 

After keeping just two true running backs on their initial 53-man roster, the New Orleans Saints signed running back Mike Gillislee Sunday (Sept. 2).

The Patriots released Gillislee Saturday (Sept. 1) after he rushed for 960 yards and 13 touchdowns the last two years.

As a vested veteran, Gillislee immediately became a free agent and one of the more accomplished backs on the open market. Given the Saints current running back situation at the position, the two sides seemed to make sense for each other.

Mark Ingram is serving a four-game suspension to start the season. Jonathan Williams, who looked to be a solid bet to make the Saints roster after a strong preseason, was among the Saints roster cuts Saturday.

That left the Saints with Alvin Kamara and rookie Boston Scott as the only true running backs on the roster, with the team also keeping fullbacks Zach Line and Trey Edmunds.

I am thinking Seans buddy Mr. Belicheck gave him a heads up on them releasing him. So that is why they cut Williams.

No one. We cut Williams, who was suppose to be Ingrams replacement while he was out 4 wks. But my theory is, they released Williams because Sean talked to Belechick and got the heads up on them releasing Gillislee.

I doubt the Pats give anyone a leg up. Just not what Belechick is about. The Cooks deal, we got rooked but we did make it work. They ended up in the SB. They have not picked up any of our players so not buying it.

He wasn't on the team this year. They have Zach Line and Trey Edmunds currently at FB. I expect Edmunds will get the boot to make room for Gillislee.

Mike G is great veteran depth to have during Ingram's absence and beyond. Kind of surprised the Pats cut him but I haven't taken the time to see who the Pats are rocking at HB either.

They drafted a RB in the 1st rd (Sony Michel), they also have Rex Burkhead and James white. They should be good but I dunno if they have any RB's on practice squad.

I agree but they have the problem we are starting to have... to much talent at one position you have to cut someone.

Sometimes we post things before events take place. Williams wasn’t signed, or at least some of us had not heard he had signed at the time these posts were made. Glad it gave you the opportunity to show us all how in the know you are though. Gosh your impressive.

That's exactly why I "preach" patience. Several around here can't wait to rush to their keyboard/phone and criticize personnel moves before knowing what is going on in actuality.

That is the whole point of a "forum". To discuss, bounce around thoughts, not cut and paste info already known and walk away.

And being wrong is not frowned upon. If I am wrong about Meredith for example I stated I will eat crow. If I was right, so what, I won't bag on people who torched me. I like hearing different perspectives and playing devil's advocate. It's what make forums entertaining.

Then why even have a thread with the current roster? Why discuss roster moves at all? So basically you’re saying we shouldn’t post things until the end of the season.
You would be perfectly happy with a board where the only one allowed to post is you. How about you go create one and see how many members you get.

What did you say about Cam Meredith? I say he's probably the most athletic receiver on the roster. He has the best potential of turning a 5yd curl into a big gain and he's a deep threat. Maybe Taquan Smith is a star but either way Meredith can't hurt.
