Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
Opening Statement:
“We did not do well. Number one, third down numbers were not good again. They were not last year when we lost to them in Tampa. Obviously, the two turnovers we had, and zero takeaways on the other side (were a major factor). That’s not the type of game that suits us and that’s the type of game we’ve played in years past as a .500 team. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of things to correct. We had way too many mistakes, and we struggled with explosives (plays on offense) that they had and we have to get cleaned up. Obviously, it starts with me and our staff and we didn’t do a good job. We will look at the tape tomorrow and start again next week.” On defensively what didn’t work: “Take your pick. We did not hurry the passer. Guys were open. Third downs were awful. They had over 500 yards. We didn’t disrupt the timing to any element of the passing game and too many penalties. I can’t think of any positives.” On the Michael Thomas play where it appeared that he might be untouched: “That’s not the frustration right now. It’s not going to be a perfect game.” Read more: https://www.neworleanssaints.com/new...a-bay-buccanee |

"We sucked on defense so bad we didn't deserve to stand for the National Anthem." - Sean Payton :bs:

Defenses have not only been bad, but historically off the charts bad. The culture must change on defense in New Orleans. |

Payton hasn't got the stones to build a D that's consistent, all he does is consistently trade up for project players. Culture won't change, one of two things would have to happen - Payton fire his BFF (not gonna happen) or Payton gets fired (Also unlikely) |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
I still miss Greg Williams... we were the most consistent under his watch.

I agree. We would've been better off just weathering the bountygate storm with him. Hindsight being 20/20... |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
The defenses under Greg Williams sucked as well, only masked by an inordinately favorable turn-over rate and a near-record number of pick-sixes...

Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
Let's re cap :
Demario was the 8th ranked MLB last season, now he's awful. While our WILL is playing MIKE. Our SAM is a backup MIKE. PRob was one of the best slot CB's in the league. Now he appears lost & confused after game 1? Lattimore was the DROY for 2017, now he's lazy, not in football shape and crying post game? Craig Robertson - all he does is makes plays with the 1's, 2's, 3's and 4 but doesn't play/limited action against a divisional foe? Me thinks it's not all on the players. |

I am baffled by how we are using our LBs. Most talented group we have had in years and we are playing all of them out of position or letting them ride the bench... but what do I know, I just watch games. |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
Payton is to blame for playing guys out of position, it has happened with every defensive coordinator we have had.
You can't tell me that isn't on Payton. |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
I love the last statement:
On Ryan Fitzpatrick catching them off guard with his ability to run: “He’s done that pretty much his whole career. He’s been pretty effective to climb and get a first down. He’s not exceptionally fast but someone who is willing to run, especially when he sees the right coverages. We have to do a better of job of keeping them contained in the pocket.” Ummm..ok, so when you realize that we cannot contain him, did it never cross your mind to spy him, especially on the last 3rd down that Fitz ran 12 yards for a 1st down. This is what really pisses me off, you see, you acknowledge it, it didn't work, so you just did nothing else about. About sums it up right, way to be the head coach. |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
OK, so we were a play away from the NFC Championship game last year, one whiff, so now we throw everybody away. Good call. I don't know why you all aren't successful NFL GM's, keep it up.

Btw did not see the game have no idea how he played, but basing it off of you bringing up his name. Just saying, a front 7 makes the back look much better...matter of fact the front 4 |
Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
Gregg Williams defense never really stopped anyone, especially in the playoffs except the SB season and that was because it caught teams off guard.

Re: Quotes from Sean Payton's postgame press conference
I didn't get to watch the game but I did watch the highlights/lowlights this morning and one thing stood out - that was some horrid blocking on the toss to Gillislee. No wonder he got the ball punched out and the ball got returned for 6. The edge was set that poorly.
It's so hard to understand the coverage breakdowns - the camera doesn't show the route combinations or what the defense is doing. I guess someone would have to look at the real tape and that's why Sean makes the big bucks. |
