Sean Payton on Cameron Meredith: 'getting him up to speed'

Sean Payton on Cameron Meredith: 'getting him up to speed'

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke with local media during a teleconference Wednesday morning, and took some time to address wide receiver Cameron Meredith’s absence in the regular season opener:

Quote:

“I think, more than anything else, it had to do with just the reps he was behind coming off training camp. We’ll see how he’s doing this week. I think from a health standpoint, he’s doing good. It’s just getting him up to speed from a timing element and getting him the reps he needs to be ready to function and go in and play consistently.”
As Payton explained, Meredith is still developing a rhythm with quarterback Drew Brees after missing time in training camp to a strained oblique muscle. Meredith figures to start from the slot once he’s on the field.

The Saints certainly could use his services. Austin Carr got the nod to start last week, playing 40 snaps, but recorded just two catches for 20 yards. The real star from the slot was Michael Thomas, who reeled in 10 of his franchise-best 16 receptions when aligned there.

That bodes well for Meredith’s production once he and Brees are clicking. Thomas and Meredith are built along the same blueprint at around 6-foot-3, 210-pounds with better short-area agility than raw speed to burn downfield. While Meredith isn’t close to the same caliber of receiver as Thomas, there’s ample opportunity for him to produce right away.

I can't wait to see Meredith out there taking some of that pressure off of Thomas.

Once Cam is fully up to speed, I expect him to become a threat in the red zone. Thomas is already prime time and you can't double team both of them.

I think this could potentially become a better offense than the 2011 team.

Keep that SUNSHINE pumping!

Sean Payton feeds on it.

By all means, continue to celebrate mediocrity.

It's always 2009 in SUNSHINE LAND!

Me either but SP has been singing this tune all offseason. If healthy I think he is just what we need to keep this offense clicking. Primarily Going to Kamara and Thomas for the next 4 weeks is going to get old and opposing defenses will know it.
I just don’t see him lasting the season. 7 more without him and you owe me $20. I will also send you one of those red and white beenie hats with the propeller on top. You have to put it on and take a pic for the board.

Only if you agree to do the same when Meredith plays in his 9th game of the season.

Tre was in on 12 total snap counts for week #1. Old man Ted Ginn Jr played well but I hope Smith picks it up vs Browns in week #2.

If Brees was forcing it to Kamara and Thomas then I'd be worried. He wasn't. They were open. They were getting WIDE open. When they weren't he got it to Ginn or Watson. We're fine on offense. The announcers were creating a problem that we don't have. We moved the ball at will and scored with ease in the red zone. We had two fumbles...not two interceptions from Brees trying to force it to our stars. We're fine. Meredith coming back and the development of Smith would just be icing on the cake.

I don’t post pictures online. Plus a beenie with a propeller wouldn’t look funny on me but it would fit u perfectly.

If we get any garbage time CM will be in there. Couldn't do it last week but he should be able to get a couple this game. Only other way would be if Thomas or Ginn go down which is what happened to him in Chicago. He's way down on the depth chart. That is the reality of the situation. It's not just the injury either. Peyton keeps stating it's more than the injury. Him and Brees are not in sync.

I expect him to be active very soon, possibly this week, and get plenty of action.

Kamara is the 3rd WR. MT, Ginn, Kamara with some Watson. Those are the 4 reads. Anybody else will achieve next to nothing.

He couldn’t hook up with Brees in off season because of rehab I guess
