New Orleans Saints receiver Cameron Meredith has yet to make his regular-season debut in a black-and-gold uniform.

But according to Saints coach Sean Payton, Meredith's first regular-season snaps could be coming soon. Payton said Meredith is doing well in practice and is progressing.

"He's healthy and, you know, this will be a week, we'll look to see how he progresses and see if we can get him into this plan," Payton said Thursday (Sept. 20).

Seems like good news. We can't expect Michael Thomas to catch 974 passes every game.

Hopefully he'll get in there and take over some of those slot duties that Thomas has been working ... in addition to his normal position. I mean, 28 catches over the first two games is awesome, but Thomas will get beat up if they try to continue that pace. Ginn isn't catching a third of his targets on the season and TreQuan hasn't been that involved either.

With Meredith and Ingram back the Saints will be extremely hard to stop.

Peyton said he wants to get Tre'Quan more work which is what I projected and was correct. 1/4 in the season and no CM which I was also correct.

Your math is poor.

We are 1/8 into the season.

Thanks, I was about to point that out.

He may be wanting to get Smith more work, but at this point Tre'Quan has exactly two more targets and one more catch on the season than Meredith.

It's not a may. He said he will be finding ways to do exactly that. Regardless, Cam is way down on the roster and it's not about the injury at this point. Worthless. Can't even play special teams. He won't play this week or next week unless it's in garbage time which is what he did in Chicago. Master of garbage time.

Geez why so much vitriol for Meredith?

We need people other than Thomas and Kamara to get involved or those guys will get injured and we'll be in trouble.

Literally everyone else has been invisible and it's a long list of people that need to step their game up;

Josh Hill
Austin Carr
Ben Watson
Ted Ginn Jr
Tre'Quan Smith
Mike Gillislee

All of these guys have been invisible come game time, we will become too predictable before long and get completely shut down when Defenses know the 2 players that will get the ball.

We have 3 WR's. More than most teams and we also get a little from Watson. Expecting everyone on the roster to get 5-6 grabs a game is silly. And Kamara is a WR just like Colston was a TE. CM and anyone else are insurance policies. I like CM but it's beyond crazy to think he will be a factor at all but this keep surfacing so I keep trying to live in reality. He will see the field in garbage time or an injury. It's not any harder than that.

I hope he is great but if he really has been healthy since preseason game 4 he has had more than enough time to get ready. It shouldn’t take a veteran this long to be able to step in and play. He had the entire camp to study film and learn the playbook and has had weeks of practice with the team.

You do realize Cameron tore his ACL and MCL? Being a veteran/studying film and learning the playbook has nothing to do why he hasn't been active. The Saints medical staff and coaches are being smart with his return.

Those Adrian Peterson type returns to greatness in 9 months after tearing major knee ligaments aren't the norm at this level of football.

From what I understand he was cleared and said to be ready to go for the last preseason game. Payton said early on that he hasn’t been happy with his receivers. Makes me think they need all the help they can get. If he was any good he would be out there. Getting Smith reps is probably a higher priority for Payton at this point. Only other excuse is he had a setback. Once again we sign an injury prone FA who won’t produce.

You want to start pumping the ball to a WR that is not ready but very close to being ready and has not played in a game in over a year for one of the most critical games.

Nevermind we have the best WR in the game who can beat any coverage or the best pass catching RB in the game. Screw them. Start chunking it to this guy. Ok.

They can't keep relying solely of Thomas to handle the entire WR load. That's asking for trouble. Carr and Tre'Quan haven't been able to become reliable targets to this point. Ginn has had his issues even though he has received a dozen targets or so. They had plans for Meredith and now is the time for him to start playing dividends whether you like it or not. Regardless of what you say it seems you are hoping for his failure just to be able to say, "I told you so."
