Saints set to face a challenge against stout Baltimore pass rush
1 Attachment(s)
The way Baltimore got after the quarterback in the first five weeks probably popped off the screen when the New Orleans Saints coaching staff watched Ravens' defensive film during the bye last week.
But then there was the sixth game against Tennessee, when Baltimore ravaged its way to more sacks (11) than it allowed completed passes (10). If it was not completely obvious before, the Ravens ability to harass opposing passers definitely has the Saints attention now. The first words spoken by Saints coach Sean Payton when he was asked what stood out to him about the Ravens' defense: "Certainly their pass rush." That is a Baltimore pass rush that recorded 11 sacks last week against the Tennessee Titans, breaking a record for a franchise known for its defense. https://image.nola.com/home/nola-med...d583cf21c8.jpg "I'm impressed, man," said Saints left tackle Terron Armstead. "Regardless of how they got them or what it looked like, you're getting to a quarterback 11 times you're doing something correct." It is a pass rush that has recorded an NFL-high 26 sacks in six games this season -- 16 of which have come in the last two games. It has powered a Ravens defense that leads the NFL in both total yards and scoring. "They've been playing really good defense," said right tackle Ryan Ramczyk. "We know coming into this week it's going to be a challenge, so we've got to prepare really well. We know what we're in for." read more on NOLA |

But how about that Saints run D? ...
If new DC for the Ravens "blitz", Brees will pick em apart. Coverage? We'll burn em. Offensively, Flacco isn't a"quick strike" ball club. We have a great offensive mind going to Baltimore on Sunday. Preparation, good film study, solid week of practice & no turnovers = win for the Saints and we keep rolling. |

put hill and ingram in the backfield blocking and kamara in the slot problem solved

Look tough defense but they've also benefited from playing the two worst offenses in the league...so have to keep things in perspective. Bungals put up 30+ on them. Grant it the Bungals were at home.

How many of those first 15 scripted plays will be screens or quick slants this week?

The way their D is set-up reminds me alot of another time when Mills and Co. played for us. Pass protection will be the key.

I take nothing away from the Ravens D, however those total sack numbers are a bit skewed to the casual viewer - see below:
Ravens D sacks vs younger, inexperienced QB's : Peterman - 3 sacks Allen - 3 Mayfield - 3 Mariota - 11 Here are the old/washed up guys (sarcasm) : Keenum - 3 Roethlisberg - 1 Dalton - 0 ^^^^^ experienced QB only 4 sacks (2nd lowest in the league if you spin it that way). Huge test for the black birds & potentially a match up nightmare as well. |

First half will be tough against that D. More concerned about Flacco lighting us up which nothing is saying he can't.

Re: Saints set to face a challenge against stout Baltimore pass rush
Nick Underhill mentioned on a recent Podcast that the Ravens are a blitz heavy team through 5 games. They better have zone to back that up against a Sean Payton Saints offense though. We have a history of hitting you with 4, 5 route concepts to kill defenses on the back end.
In saying that, you may want to keep an eye on Mike Thomas & Josh Hill ... those slants and crossing patterns could open up BIG time. Ravens aren't coming after Mariota or that O line this week ... #9 will eventually make you pay. Can't wait until Sunday. |

Blitz heavy? Better watch the screens to Kamara!

Re: Saints set to face a challenge against stout Baltimore pass rush
The Raven's have a stout defense, possibly the best the Saint's have faced in 2018. That said, the Raven's have yet to face a team with as potent an offense as the Saints.
Offense line - top five ranking, run or pass. Tight end - not great but solid, blocking and receiving. Receivers - one top 5, with enough young, fast talent to keep the DB's honest. Running backs - best tandem in the game. Game plan - one of the best offensive minds in the game today. QB - GOAT. |
