Ex-Cowboys exec reminisces about Saints passing on Lawrence Taylor

But back to what’s important here: the Saints. Brandt took the opportunity to share an anecdote between himself and Bum Phillips, who ran the Saints as head coach at the time. As Brandt tells it, he approached Phillips shortly before the 1981 NFL Draft – the Saints had the first overall selection, while the Cowboys didn’t pick until 26. Brandt made the Saints an offer “they couldn’t refuse”, so he could boldly leap all the way up to the top and swipe away Lawrence Taylor.

But Phillips refused. New Orleans had 17 draft choices that year, most in the league, and figured that was enough to justify leaving Dallas at the alter. Their only mistake: drafting running back George Rogers instead of Taylor, who the Giants were quick to select with the second overall pick. The Saints listed away through the early 80’s, with Phillips getting within two seconds and a field goal of seeing the team into its first playoffs appearance, but came up short. Rogers had a solid enough career, earning Rookie of the Year, making the Pro Bowl, and setting a single-season rushing mark for the Saints (1,674 yards) that endures to this day.
