Thursday injury report: Saints send Ted Ginn Jr to IR

By: John Sigler | 1 minute ago

The New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens updated their official injury reports ahead of their Sunday kickoff. Here’s what we learned:

From the Saints

Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (knee) is now going on Injured Reserve, per Field Yates of ESPN. Ginn’s saga was really, really strange. He had his best year as a pro by far in 2017, struggled to pick up new aspects of the offense in 2018, and was benched after botching a kickoff return against the New York Giants. He’s been listed as limited or DNP on the injury report for weeks, but didn’t look hampered in games before sitting out the Washington game before the bye week. Evidently, he’s hurt badly enough to go to IR and possibly return in time for the playoffs.

Besides Ginn, four other Saints did not participate in Thursday’s practice: defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (ankle) and starting left guard Andrus Peat (head). Peat was downgraded from limited reps on Wednesday, so must have suffered some kind of serious head injury to miss today’s practice altogether. The other starting guard, Larry Warford (back), also did not participate. Warford hasn’t had any injury issues thus far this season, so missing him and Peat both is troubling to say the least. Reserve lineman Jermon Bushrod (non-injury reasons) did not practice.

Marshon Lattimore (concussion) was a full participant and, per the Advocate’s Nick Underhill, can safely put his brain injury behind him. An independent doctor examined Lattimore and cleared him of any lingering symptoms, sending him out of the NFL’s concussion protocoal and into the Baltimore game at full strength. Two other Saints were upgraded to full participation: wide receiver Cameron Meredith (knee) and starting left tackle Terron Armstead (knee).

It should be noted that the Saints re-signed offensive tackle Michael Ola on Thursday, per Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune. Ola has bounced on and off of the roster this season, never appearing in a game. The Saints have brought him in earlier to help fill out practice reps with guys like Peat on the mend. If someone – Peat, Armstead, or anyone else – can’t go on Sunday, the Saints will likely again tab Josh LeRibeus or Jermon Bushrod to suit up instead.

From the Ravens

Baltimore saw three players return to full activity after resting on Wednesday: wide receiver John Brown (non-injury related), safety Eric Weddle (non-injury related), and cornerback Brandon Carr (knee).

Three Ravens defensive backs were limited in practice on Thursday: two that we already knew about in Anthony Averrett (hamstring) and Anthony Levine Sr. (hamstring), and a new entry in Marlon Humphrey (thigh). Humphrey was not listed in Wednesday’s report, so this is a new injury and his status for Sunday should be in question.

Ravens starting left guard Alex Lewis (neck) again did not participate in practice after also sitting out in Wednesday. Lewis has appeared in 458 of 476 offensive snaps (96.2-percent) for Baltimore, more than quarterback Joe Flacco (451 reps). With Lewis out of the lineup, the Ravens will be asking one of two rookies to fill in: third round pick Orlando Brown Jr., a left tackle project from Oklahoma, or sixth round selection Bradley Bozeman, who played center at Alabama.

If Baltimore goes with Brown, they’d likely put him at right tackle – against All-Pro edge rusher Cam Jordan – and shift the starter, James Hurst, back to the spot he manned last year at left guard. But if Bozeman gets the nod, he can slot in without moving anyone else around. He’ll just have to be ready for the disruptive Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins and super-athletic rookie Marcus Davenport, who the Saints like to send barreling in at guards like Bozeman off of twists and stunts.

It's your time to shine Tre'quan.

If we designate him to return he’ll be back for week 15 @ Carolina. We actually play them week 17 as well so it’ll be nice to get that extra firepower back late in the season for some very important playoff-shaping games.

That doesn't mean they are out as of now.

Exactly, they may just need guards for practice during the week while our guys rest, recover...

That's a tough break with Ginn, but that's why a third round pick was spent on Tra'Quan Smith, so step the **** up....

And don't forget we've been developing Keith Kirkwood who very nearly made this roster - different kind of receiver, but a receiver nonetheless...

Besides, it's not like we don't have other weapons; but now I get why they brought Wynn in on the practice squad for that smaller, faster option...

Looks like butter is done for the year. I dunno if he will make it on the team next yr if Smith turn out to be good.

Tre'Quan is the WR2 from here on out. I knew this from the day he was drafted. Jump ball specialist that can take it to the house at anytime. Glad Payton finally had a gut check.

He had already passed Ginn at the Z as far as I was concerned. That gives us young quality starters at all three WR positions now. Not a lot of depth though. Just Carr and Kirkwood, most likely.

His salary slot won't make it on to next year's roster for sure...

The Deadskins game was an excellent start for Tre however we need to see him win more one on one situations, starting on Sunday.

The Ravens play a lot of Cover 1 & 3. The opportunities should be there for Tre' to separate from man coverage.

X factor here - Coach Curtis Johnson.

I think so. With Ginn gone that's more reps and with MI back I could see the Ravens sleeping on him. Deep ball should be there.

Could he be like the Hall of Fame Redskins CB Darrell Green and still be running a 4.3 at age 35?
In any case, he is no Darrell Green. :hallucinate:

FYI Darrell Green was rated the fastest man in NFL History!

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e8/f0...c19d1da5a6.gif

Green was a fast mofo however I believe Deion Sanders may have been even faster. I can't find the video but have you ever seen that highlight of him running down Buffalo Bills Don Beebe (he's a 4.20 guy on a slow day) on that kick off return?

Bo Jackson weighed over 230 lbs and legend has it he was a 4.15 guy :hallucinate:. Yikes !!!!

Freaks.

It was said the Skins recorded Darrell Green at 4.09. In any case, that video is really cool. :)

Ginn had a knee scope according to Payton. It looks real good for him being able to return after eight weeks.
