‘Voodoo City,’ : The Superdome Curse
1 Attachment(s)
If you know anything at all about the New Orleans Saints, it’s that for most of the first 40 years of their existence, they played like they were cursed -- as if the Mercedes-Benz Superdome had been built on a graveyard or something. Funny thing about that: It kind of was. Or, at least, that’s long been the prevailing wisdom.
In 1987, crews doing work just outside the Dome made a grisly discovery when more than mere dirt came up in their shovels. Human remains and bits of gravestones were unearthed, as well. Also resurfacing: The story that the stadium had been built on an old graveyard -- and the theory that the Dome was thus cursed. But was the iconic New Orleans structure actually built on a graveyard? Was it cursed? Is it still? https://i.nola.com/resizer/VP-i_T4Ny...P7XKTJS3BY.jpg The entrance to the Girod Street Cemetery is shown in a 1953 photo. • By the 1950s, the cemetery was an overgrown -- and decidedly creepy -- eyesore. Under the administration of Mayor Chep Morrison, it was deconsecrated in January 1957, with the idea of redeveloping the land as part of the city’s then-growing downtown area.
