Sean Payton is NFC's longest-tenured head coach

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was relieved of his position on Sunday after losing at home to the Arizona Cardinals, leaving New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton with the longest tenure in his conference. Payton and McCarthy were each hired for the 2006 season, and now the Saints head coach stands along at the top of the NFC.

Considering the broader scope of the NFL, Payton trails only Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis (hired in 2003) and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick (hired in 2000) for the longest stay in one spot. Lewis agreed to a contract extension in the offseason with Cincinnati that ends with a team option in 2019, so there’s a real chance that Payton outlasts him as well. NFL head coaches are the longest-tenured on average in pro sports per Business Insider, but they still typically last only about 4 years with one team.

Remember those awful times when McCarthy was our offensive coordinator? The plays were so predictable at times. I was actually surprised how successful he has been in Green Bay.

For a year or two there in mid 2010's I was thinking Sean had lost his touch and we would also be better off parting ways. But now I'm glad to eat crow and watch a reinvigorated Sean and this Saints team.

McCarthy was successful for two reasons, Favre and then Rodgers. But as you think about it how successful would SP have been without Drew.

The Dolphins went from Culpepper (whom I expect we would have had) to Trent Green. Maybe Sean could have got more out of one or both of them (most likely Green) We may have wound up with Patrick Willis although Ginn is still playing.

At NFL level play, team chemistry is a major factor. When the star QB and head coach can't play well together, something has to give. McCarthy was in a proverbial "heads you win, tails I lose" situation.

There are claims of him tanking to force McCarthy's firing, which game video evidence. Man, I would defniitely think twice before signing on for the head coach job. One of Rogers prior teammates is publicly calling him a Prima Dona. He can't get along with his own family. His mother lives in N California near the recent major fires. He donates money to relief efforts for PR but doesn't call to check on his own mom.

In short, the guy is an All Pro jerk.

What I really don't understand is why he keeps getting endorsement monies. If I was State Farm, he is one of the last players I would want in a commecial.
