Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith fined for hit on Alvin Kamara

1 Attachment(s)
Referees in the game between the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys did not penalize Jaylon Smith for a helmet-to-helmet hit against Alvin Kamara last week, but the league office did.

According to an ESPN report, the NFL fined Smith $26,739 for the hit on Kamara, which occurred on a third down play in the fourth quarter of the Saints' 13-10 loss. The Saints punted on the next play with 9:35 remaining in the game, and Dallas ground out nearly seven minutes of the game clock on the ensuing drive.

Kamara briefly went into the Saints locker room after the hit, but returned to the field for the Saints' final offensive possession.

Smith said this about the hit to Dallas media members Thursday (Dec. 6): “It’s the last gladiator sport. As I was going to tackle him he turned his body at the last second and I hit him. I hit him. I put my arms out to hit him and there was some contact. But, like I said, it’s the game that we love and definitely no intentions to play the game the wrong way. I’ve been taught well.”

Smith plans to appeal the fine, according to the ESPN report.

Kamara barely changed posture prior to the hit. This was about as text book leading with the helmet and not looking through your tackle like you are taught. It's the exact play the intention of the rule wants out of the game. The zebras were abysmal in that game all around and have been disappointing all year long as a whole.

Second time AK has been intentionally targeted in the side of the head...about the same time last year same thing except it was Atlanta.

Obvious targeting. Smith is looking at the ground as he slams into Kamara. Fine should be higher and just like college (or soccer) there should be targeting penalties that lead to ejections or suspensions.

I couldn't agree more. No place in football for those helmet to helmet shots. If targeting is in question, go to replay and take action (ejection) if necessary. Smith, Burfict and Deion Jones are repeat offenders.

Not only did he lead with the helmet he also launched himself. That hit could be used as an example of how NOT to get fined. I started to say NOT get penalized too but...

And don't think other teams didn't take notice that the yellow flag stayed in the NFL official's back pocket...

Err... we could have won that game if they would have called the penalty.

Yeah great
The NFL picks up some fine money

That makes up for a 15 yard penalty that would have likely led to a field goal in a 3pt loss in a game that would have the Saints still as the 1 seed in the NFC. But as long as the Cowboys get a prime time win in Dallas and keep on track to make the playoffs what else matters

What the Saints had to say about the hit

The Saints weren’t vocally upset about the hit after the game, for the most part. Alvin Kamara himself didn’t have much to say about the hit.

“Did one come out? It is what is. It doesn’t matter what I was expecting…Yeah, I’m cool. I came back out, didn’t I?”

Drew Brees said to “let the league deal with that” when he was referring to Smith’s hit on Kamara potentially being fined.

Head coach Sean Payton, who is on the NFL Competition Committee, gave the referees a little leeway with their mistake:

“I was involved in the process of the rule. Listen, those are hard to call as well. Really, it’s tough when the guys are moving around real fast. I haven’t seen it as cleanly as you guys have. Listen, we got beat. We got beat tonight and there will be a number of things we that we can point to but overall, we just didn’t do enough as a team.”

Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins had the strongest reaction after the game, via NOLA.com:

“Jaylon Smith’s head was down. He launched right into Kamara, hit him with the crown of his helmet,” defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins said. “That’s above my pay grade to say what the league should and should not do, what officials should and should not do.

“But, I play football, and I know what a helmet-to-helmet is, and to me it was helmet to helmet.”

All offseason all I heard was about how much attention was going to be payed to the helmet rule. People were worried linemen would get flags just for doing their jobs. It was going to ruin the NFL.
Yet here we are.

I don't get why refs need cameras on the field. Can't they have press box refs who look at this stuff immediately. It would make the game go a lot faster instead of waiting on the field refs and things like this could be caught easily and make the game safer.

The whole challenge and camera review needs improvement.

Hell officials view penalties and TDS from NY after 2 min warning don’t they? Why can’t they look at all the controversial calls. It would make a hell of a lot more sense to do that, especially when it comes to helmet contact than to deal with it after the fact. A player gets by with it once and he thinks the refs aren’t going to call it tight during that particular game and wind up delivering another hit that gets somebody seriously injured.

Re: Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith fined for hit on Alvin Kamara

A perfect example of how "The League" can manipulate the outcome of games. The hit to the helmet, the "generous spot" for the "first" down. Look at any close or "BIG" game and you'll see the same thing. The next CBA should be very interesting with two "rival" leagues on the horizon.

Re: Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith fined for hit on Alvin Kamara

Actually, the fines go to charity, so it's a tax write-off for the players...

You want to affect real change? Pull game checks and have them sit out games...

Betcha Mark Ingram even has pause when he reaches for the salt at the dinner table now...

So.... what's the fine on the officials for missing an obvious call?

They did fire one official this year... I suppose as a warning shot, not that it's made any difference, obviously.

$13k fine for Lattimore putting money in the Salvation Army prop. I’ll bet donations went up the next day...
$26k for spearing the helmet.
The fines are ridiculous for both.

While we’re at it, how the hell os Burfict still in the league? The #1 most fined player in the NFL at over $450k.... there’s more evidence of his intent to injure than 10 seasons of bounty gate yet the guy is still allowed to play.

The NFL’s mismanagement of fouls, replay and hits is what will drive people away.

Half of fine should go to the player attacked. That would get in craw of offenders

Eloquently posted...

Saw some more of Jerry's Home Cookin' today with the Eagles with a heavy dose of Officiating Bullshinski...

And as '76 posted, I turned the game off, not out of frustration or bitterness of a Saints loss, but at the apparent manipulation of game outcomes by league officials and their representatives...

If I wanted to watch WWF Wrestling, I'd already be watching it...

The penalty on Goedert was egregious. You have to WANT to see a foul to call that one. Now I’m not a conspiracy guy but if the tin foil hat fits, well.....

That was the one that did it for me...

Had a headache all day, despite abstaining from drink, other than about 2l of bottled water...

After getting back from watching Saints game, took a much needed nap, only to wake up to an entertaining Philly-Big D game be ruined by that BS officiating??? Clique!!!

Eagles were hosed today ...

Lots of favorable calls for the Cows. On that 4th and 1 ... Zeke knee was down short. No replay or second look just to confirm?

It's sickening. I swear I hate that Dallas Cowboys franchise.
