Mueller to Miami

Dolphins | Mueller to Join Staff - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 6 Jun 2005 07:34:58 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Miami Dolphins have hired Randy Mueller for the top spot in their personnel department. Mueller is currently working for ESPN.com and before that he was the general manager for the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks. An official announcement on Mueller's hiring could come as early as Monday, June 6. Mueller will replace general manager Rick Spielman, who resigned his post Friday, June 3, but he is not expected to have the same title.

RE: Mueller to Miami

Wow... Saban then Mueller... WOW! Why can't we make management decisions like that!?!?!??!?!??!?! DAMMIT! :x

saintswhodi 06-06-2005 10:08 AM

Wow is right. Now we will see if Mr. Benson was right in his hot headed decision to fire this guy. I wonder who will be a contender sooner, us or Miami. We could have made a play for Saban, had we fired Haslett as he should have been. We should still have had Mueller, and there are many personnel decisions since his departure that second that. Very good for Miami.

Yes, it'll be very interesting to see how he does with Miami. I've often wondered what would have happened with the Saints had he stayed. Of course, he was terminated after the 2001 collapse, so maybe it wouldn't have been too much different...except that Sullivan wouldn't be on the team.

Isn't that alone enough? :D

But we wouldn't have had Tesucky, or Ruff either more than likely.

Also, he wasn't fired cause of the 2001 collapse, as it was Haslett's decision to let AB play injured. He was fired cause he didn't stroke Benson's ego by telling him he was trading Ricky Williams, a move that turned out very VERY well for us. But wasn't used as wisely as possible after his departure.

Trust me, he made his share of personnel mistakes. Can anyone say Dale Carter, or Albert Connell? Norman Hand, Grady Jackson?
He's no wizard.

BlackandBlue 06-06-2005 11:50 AM

Hand? Before or after the 2000 season?

Doesn't have to be, just had to be better than what we have. What we have appears to have gotten better, but it took years of a learning curve. That curve would have been greatly diminished were Randy still on board.

Those guys came in and contribute on day one. After he was gone is when things slacked off...

papz 06-06-2005 02:06 PM

Euph is correct... those guys played very well before Mueller left. Things went south afterwards. Connell might have been a mistake, but at the time he was an extremely productive wide receiver for the Redskins. I liked the move at first, but I guess he couldn't change his ways.

newshound 06-06-2005 05:23 PM

Man I knew it would only be a matter of time. I guess Saban isn't going to be taking every aspect of the operation over after all... or he did and decided to be smart and get a gm.

FireVenturi 06-06-2005 06:00 PM

he is much better than what we have, Miami might have just saved there season cause you know Randy has a couple of moves in him before Sept, and lets not forget Ricky might come back!!!!!!!

dberce1 06-06-2005 06:19 PM

I'm happy for Mueller. Felt like the guy was blackballed for long enough in the NFL...by who I wonder???

jnormand 06-06-2005 11:32 PM

I thought Mueller was a good GM. I wish we would have kept the guy around. He made some mistakes and he was undeservingly fired. I seriously doubt that the aquisition of Mueller is going to make Miami a contender this year. And Ricky.....please, the Dolphins would have been smarter to leave the doper in Africa or South America or where ever he was. Good luck with Ricky Miami! LOL

WhoDat 06-07-2005 08:33 AM

I doubt that the Dolphins will be great any time soon. That said, Mueller and Saban together seems like a winning strategy to me - but it's really way too early to tell. How do you think Ricky will love being back with the GM who traded him away? LOL

... you'd be surprised how easily you make up with people when you owe 8 mil...

jnormand 06-08-2005 03:47 AM

Mueller and Saban does sound like a good combo. I don't understand why Saban is willing to take Ricky back. Why? They just drafted a good young running back, now Saban wants Ricky? I'm sorry, but Ricky is creepy. Williams totally backstabbed his team and bailed on them. Saban should be telling the doper to go somewhere else. Can someone please tell me what Saban is thinking here?

Dolphins | General Manager Hiring Practices Questioned - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 9 Jun 2005 22:52:33 -0700

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins are coming under fire from the Fritz Pollard Alliance about how they hired new general manager Randy Mueller. The alliance, which is an advocacy group pushing for more head coaching and front-office opportunities for minorities, is unhappy the Dolphins hired Mueller Monday, June 6, without interviewing any other candidates in the 72 hours after Rick Spielman resigned. The Dolphins apparently satisfied the league with how they handled the hiring. The Dolphins cited the fact they interviewed two minority candidates (Jerry Reese and Paul Warfield) in January 2004 for the general manager position that ultimately went to Spielman. Alliance spokesman John Wooten said the alliance submitted a list of three potential minority interview candidates to head coach Nick Saban when it appeared Spielman was on his way out. According to Wooten, Saban didn't return the alliance's calls or try arranging to speak with any of the three recommended candidates.

This sort of complaint is so tiring. I completely understand and agree that minority hiring should be at a minimum monitored so that no group is simply being excluded, but what business is it of some outside org to question a move like this? The way I understand it Mueller was their first choice and they never pursued anyone else. What's wrong with that?
