MVP: Patrick Mahomes
During the 2017 preseason, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes provided a glimpse of what was to come.
Here’s the play. I remember seeing it at the time, thinking instantly that the rookie from Texas Tech was destined for great things. And it’s precisely why I argued last season, as the Chiefs slumped, that Mahomes should get a chance to work his apparent magic. The Chiefs resisted. After the season ended with a wild-card playoff loss at home to the Titans, however, the Chiefs made the change, opting to make Mahomes the starter and to trade Alex Smith. It worked. It worked well. A year later, the Chiefs have the best record in the AFC, and Mahomes is the NFL’s MVP. Weeks of debate and discussion became a no brainer once the season ended. Fifty touchdown passes. More than 5,000 passing yards. More highlights in one season than most quarterbacks create in an entire career. Funny body throws. Off balance throws. Sidearm throws. No-look throws. Mahomes is a new breed of quarterback, and a guy who immediately became the best player in the sport. And he’s only 23. PFT Guess this means the Saints win the SB, since the MVP is a jinx award in terms of winning the SB. :bng: |
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
They will figure him out next season like they do most 1 year wonders

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
The last NFL MVP to win a Super Bowl was Kurt Warner in 1999.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Steelers in the playoffs at Arrowhead in the ‘93 playoffs behind Joe Montana. That is their ONLY post-season win in their stadium, since it opened in 1972. Good luck with all that Kansas City! Chiefs will be one and done. |
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Hopefully it will motivate Brees to stop stinking up the joint. People gripe about Teddy’s performance but Brees hasn’t looked much better the past 4-5 games.

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
I don't know, they are still really good without Hunt. Mahomes, seems to struggle some without Hunt but he's still getting it done.
|
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Does anyone think that the Saints would have had 1/4 of the success they have had without Brees?
|
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Every QB of a team in the playoffs could make an argument for the MVP. Mahomes has incredible arm talent. He's truly one of the players in the NFL worth watching. Brees should have won one before now. Tua should have won the Heisman. I don't have a vote in either.

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Congrats Mahomes. Homerism aside, hard to argue against his stats alone. Don’t forget Saints fans - Payton was selecting Mahomes just before Reid swooped in and stole him.
Chiefs will make it to the AFCCG. |

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
It's a shame that every season Brees accomplishes something amazing it happens to be the same year someone else does too. Only difference is Brees has done it year in and out for most of his career and always seems to slip by this award. While I'd love to see Drew add a regular season MVP title to his accolades I am sure he's fine with the opportunity to add another SB and SB-MVP to his resume instead.
Brees will be a first ballot Hall of Famer and frankly I think Colin Cowherd was spot on when he said history will be very kind to Drew Brees after he retires. I think all the attention and respect he missed while amassing these accomplishments will be looked at in more reverence when he leaves the game and be elevated above some others who garnered the spotlight more while playing. |

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Don't forget that this award is as much about sports writers flexing their influence among other sports writers than it is about getting it right...
But, as much a Saints fan as I am, even I have to admit Brees slight fade down the stretch (Dallas game, forward) didn't help to sway undecided voters... |
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Historically, with only a couple exceptions, the writers have voted lazily and just given it to the QB on the team with the best record. This year, that just happens to be Brees.

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Maholmes had more than double the INTs of Brees and almost double the fumbles. He did not have double the touchdowns. Maholmes is partly a system QB. Average Alex Smoth led the NFL in passer rating in 2017 in the Chiefs system and that was before they added a $16 million a year receiver on top of that for Maholmes. Brees has been denied the MVP before because despite his superior stats, some other QB has more wins or a few less INTs. Now Brees has more wins and less INTs and the rules change. Brees has thrown for 5000 yards every other year and never gets MVP, yet somehow now its a big closing argument for Maholmes, 5000=MVP? Sorry Brees has a running game and defense, but he is the better QB. Maholmes could not beat the Rams either, Brees did. Brees has the higher passer ratings, the higher PFF rating, half the turnovers, and did it all with his #2 receiver being some mix of Ginn/Kirkwood/Smith etc and his starting TE being a 38yo journeyman while Maholmes has $16m/yr Watkins and #1 TE in the NFL Kelce as options behind Hill.

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
Yawn. Mahomes will be sitting next to his trophy watching TV weekend after next anyhow. Congrats, dude, but your D & your turnovers are a recipe for 1 & done.

Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
I find it impossible to quantify "Brees stinking up the joint", and as I read through the voting justifications I find it impossible to quantify Mahomes being an MVP..
Total Yards: This is a fairly irrelevant stat isn't it? After all, Peyton Manning broke 5000 yards once in his career and Drew has broken 5000 yards five times. Matt Ryan was only 76 yards short this season. Completion %: Drew is 9% better and set a new league record. Passer rating (fairly grey on how this is calculated but still): Drew 3% better and now owns the 6th highest seasonal Passer rating in history # of TDs: You shouldnt talk total TDs without also balancing it with INTs. With the exception of Aaron Rodgers, Drew had the lowest number of INTs in the league for QBs over 3000 yards. Drew is 6.4 TD/INT, 2.3 TDs per INT better than Mahomes. Interceptions/Pass : Drew 1.02% more than twice as good as Mahomes 2.07% Rushing TDs: Brees 4 twice as many as Mahomes For the hardheads that 'ignore performance stats'... We sit on top of the Division, Conference, and League... 13-3 is better than 12-4 and we dumped the last game. Greg Rosenthol gives it to Mahomes because of 'his incredible consistency', yet Brees is more consistent in nearly every category. League MVP is a farce and has been for years. I just cant be a good sport about a shill award that favors the leagues need for good publicity. |
Re: MVP: Patrick Mahomes
In my opinion, Super Bowl MVP is a more honorable and distinguished award. I want to see Drew Brees get another one this season. Maybe next year he can get the NFL MVP.

You nailed it my friend! I feel the very same way. Drew would like to have it I'm sure but I feel confident he would much rather win a Superbowl even if he didn't make MVP. Alvin Kamara has as good a chance as number 9 in all actuality. |
