PFF grades Marcus Davenport as NFL's best rookie pass rusher
New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport hasn’t played in almost three weeks, but no other rookie has threatened his seat at the top of the class. Per Pro Football Focus’ thorough evaluations, Davenport is the NFL’s best rookie edge defender.
Davenport went down after logging 4 sacks and 7 other quarterback hits, but his real success has come in run defense. 5 of his 11 tackles have dropped opponents for loss of yards, and PFF’s in-house “run stop percentage” stat grades him best among his rookie peers at 9.8-percent. Compare that to the production of other highly-drafted rookies like Denver Broncos first round pick Bradley Chubb, and Tennessee Titans second round draftee Harold Landry. Chubb has twice the sacks (8) and a few more hits (11), but he’s seen a significantly higher snap count even before Davenport was sidelined by injury. Landry, billed as the most pro-ready pass rusher by draft enthusiasts on social media, has logged just 2 sacks and 5 other hits. It’s clear why the Saints valued Davenport so highly, and these results from PFF just do a little more to validate the call to trade up for him. Will he be good to go for our first playoff game?

Maybe the Saints knew what they were doing after all?

I was shocked by his run defense. I did not expect him to be so capable at setting the edge and playing the run with such fervor.

Let the statistic illustrate my point... 2018 Rookie Edge Defender Comparison: Player Name - Gm - GS - Tk - TkL - Sk - PD- FF - FR - DTD - PFF Grade - Rd/Pick Taken M. Davenport 13.0 - 0 - 11.0 - 6.0 - 4.0 - 2.0 - 1.0 - 0.0 - 67.7 - 1/14 (Two (2) First Round Picks) S. Hubbard 16.0 - 0 - 34.0 - 7.0 - 6.0 - 2.0 - 1.0 - 1.0 - 1.0 - 65.9 - 3/77 (Third Round, 77th Pick) And there was what we already had: Alex Okafor 16.0 - 16 - 36 - 5.0 - 4.0 - 1.0 - 0.0 - 1.0 - 0 - 71.9 - Free Agent For the record, want nothing but success for the Saints on this selection - my argument is the price was far more than the value and the statistic reinforce my argument... |

Been very impressed with Davenport, even in a game where we weren’t play D last week when he was on the field he was the only one getting pressure (ended up knocking their QB out of the game). |
Re: PFF grades Marcus Davenport as NFL's best rookie pass rusher
We gave up ONE first round pick and swapped spots in the first round....the guy had a toe injury pretty hard to explode from your base if you can't push off. Marcus is going to be fine when he's healthy he makes a hell of a difference. Stats don't tell the whole story,

Thought it was the right decision at the time, and feel even stronger about it now.

Re: PFF grades Marcus Davenport as NFL's best rookie pass rusher
IMO Davenport was still worth going up to get in the draft. Even in limited snaps, he's been as good as advertised.
We could be looking at the next Demarcus Ware (Jeff Ireland draft pick while in Dallas) type player in MD. Glad he's a Saint. |

JP I was referring to the talking heads in media.
Regardless of comparison we need more time to truly evaluate. This wasn’t a pick for 2018. He has the ability to become a top 10 DE |
Re: PFF grades Marcus Davenport as NFL's best rookie pass rusher
Love the dude. He’s improved every game he’s played. Stays healthy and he will be a great compliment to Jordan.

...and the additional 1st round pick they gave up will be the 32nd, which makes the deal sweeter.
