Should the Saints make a run at Earl Thomas?

New Orleans Saints fans want the team to go for broke every year during free agency. The hot names on social media in the 2019 cycle so far are two safeties: Houston Texans star and hometown hero Tyrann Mathieu, and the Seattle Seahawks’ Earl Thomas. Mathieu is likely to re-sign with Houston, so we’ll rule him out.

Here’s the case for making a run at Thomas, and the argument against such a move:

Earl Thomas is coming off a major injury and he's going to want to be paid mega money. The frontrunner so far in signing him is the Forty Whiners.

Or the CowGirls?

I think Honey Badger is an option, despite what the article says.

I'd say no, mainly for salary cap reasons. He would probably be very expensive.

Pass on ET. Coach up Marcus. I’m happy with our secondary aside from slot CB and SS

Earl wants to end his career in Dallas.

Let him end it there.

Any useful portion of his career already ended in Seattle.

Have we learned nothing from Jairus Byrd?!? All he keeps talking about is getting paid - good for him, just not on our cap dime...

Dallas has Seattle's old defensive coordinator from the Legion of Boom era, so that might be a reason for Earl to want to go there.

He's still going to want to be paid mega money though and they are about to break the bank on Prescott who has reportedly said he wants to be paid big.

Earl's injury history must be taken into consideration for this to be an option. I'd hate to overpay for a guy who has lost a major step.

Too old, too expensive, too hurt. Also didn't like the way he handled himself and his contract negotiations this past year.

Earl Thomas Flips Middle Finger To Seahawks Bench! - YouTube

I never understood the media fascination with painting that team out to be like they are some awesome role models. The Legion of Boom had one of the most unbearable bandwagons since the 90's Cowboys. They were completely unlikable as a team outside of QB Russell Wilson who is a stand up guy.

I still remember Lynch grabbing his junk scoring TDs and generally being a jerk to the media, but was given a free pass for it. The NFL even had to edit out his TD celebrations in the playoffs cause he always had to grab his junk when scoring.

Thomas was given a free pass for his middle finger, as well as Sherman there and all his antics. I forget what player it was in the Super Bowl who had the TD celebration as if he was sitting on the toilet.

I hated the LOB and hoped to see them fail from day one. I don't care how much people hate the Patriots, I was thankful for them beating them in that SB and ending all that "dynasty" talk. Perfect karma the way it ended with that Butler INT. People forget that it took Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers choking away a 16-0 lead to even get them back in that SB. They had no business being there and then choked a 10 point lead away to Brady in the 4th quarter. I still laugh when I see that gif of Sherman's smile fading away.

Seattle is already overrated in the off season. Brian Schottenhiemer is still the OC and after they made Jason Garrett of all people look like a competent coach in the playoffs, I'm not a big believer in Sneaky Pete as a head coach. They aren't going further than the divisional round unless some team chokes all over themselves like how Green Bay did in 2014 or the Vikings with the missed field goal in 2015.

Precisely.

Dak, Zeke, that All Pro Guard, DLawrence and Cooper still require new deals.

From a financial standpoint, they could put together a package to appease Earl but that would be their only "splash" off season signings.

Just don't think Stephen Jones will give Earl a call this off season.

Why the hell would we going after a banged up loud mouth with a Madonna mindset? He would destroy the locker room. No thank you. No more Seattle players

Keep our defense intact with the exception of a DT and DE additions. We need to be in offensive mode during the off season and draft!

Major, their biggest liability on the field of play on defense has been their safety play - giving up the big pass play (sound familiar?)...

Now they need a head coach with all the talent they have now - and a Center now that Frederick has a suspect health condition...

Unfortunate it didn't work out. Couldn't stay healthy in NO and rarely made plays on the back end. Byrd was a ball hawk in Buffalo, then came here and did nothing.

Maybe bad coaching/scheme?

Like I mentioned, when a team lets a PLAYER leave, there is a reason. Buyer Beware.

Re: Should the Saints make a run at Earl Thomas?

Can't compare Byrd and Thomas. Thomas is far superior talent. I understand talking about off the field stuff (I don't understand that either) but on the filed dude just stands out. He made Richard Sherman elite and some corners got paid thanks to his play. (Maxwell)
I remember Drew Brees interview on Dan Patrick show during superbowl week (Seattle played in the SB). He was asked about that secondary, Sherman... He said something like: Yeah, Sherman and all those guys are great but Thomas is the man. Best player on that defense.
Is it scheme or lack of talent but safeties on Saints defense almost never help corners the way Thomas does on regular basis.
