Drew Brees restructures contract with Saints
 

The Saints have a little more cap space at their disposal as they head into the second day of the new league year.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that quarterback Drew Brees has restructured his deal with the team.

Brees’ contract for 2019 calls for him to make a salary of $11.05 million and a roster bonus of $11.95 million. He’ll still receive that $23 million, but $10.8 million of his expected $33.5 million cap charge will be pushed into the 2020 season. That’s a voidable year, so there will have to be further contract moves to come if the Saints want to avoid a big dead money hit next year.

Gotta try to make one more run at it. It'll cost us when Brees is done playing, but hopefully by then we will have a decent QB in mind to take the reigns.

I hope this means Drew wants to play two more years. If not, well, we're going all in hopefully with a couple of nice free agent signings to send him off with another Lombardi! :bng:

I expect that Brees wants to play 1) as long as he enjoys the whole process, 2) as long as Brady is playing to keep ahead of him in important career records, and 3) as long as he feels the team is capable of winning it all.

That all may mean more than two more years. In fact, I would be shocked if he doesn't play at least three more.

Good move. Free up as much coin as possible and go on a savvy shopper FA spree if we are rolling with Brees one more time. The draft is not an option. Let's go buy the SB and get this over with.

Brees is doing like Manning did with his final contract restructuring in Denver, which paved the way to give them more money to get a few more pieces for their final run in 2015.

He wants another ring so badly, this had to be done.

We're damn lucky to have Drew! I hope he retires years from now and owns all the records with little possibility of them being broken. I anticipate that Drew will play at least as long as Brady does. Brady is older but Drew has a surgically repaired throwing shoulder and he still has zip to his ball and his placement is still laser accurate. He's too stubborn to quit just yet. :p

And let's be honest, it was more than a horrible non-call, it was a badly called game by Payton that killed it...

I don't think Payton/Loomis get enough credit for the way they've transformed this team. After the 3rd consecutive 7-9 season I had my doubts but now, I'm about as confident in this front office as I could be. (Even after the stupid *** Easton contract)

For a decade the Saints were a high octane passing team and they had a lot of success. But with Drew's impending retirement, they've changed this team into a hard nosed running team with a stout defense. Whomever the next QB is going to be, they've set them up the best way they can.

For years our rival's fans have been drooling at the thought of the years of rebuilding the Saints will have to do when Brees retires but I think they've already done it, or at least a long ways toward it.

That's just how I see it anyways.

Yeah, I agree we are lucky to have Brees....

Could be worse. We could have that big baby in Green Bay who demanded to be the highest paid player in history; completely crippling his team's potential to put playmakers around him cause he's getting most of the money on their cap. (Not to mention, also got his coach fired this past year).

I know people used to call Brees greedy over his deal in 2012, but that is a long time ago at this point.
