Report: Former Saints TE Ben Watson considering return to NFL

Former New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson exited the 2018 season with intentions to retire from the NFL, but he may feel like he has some gas left in the tank. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Watson is weighing his options and might consider one more year after his wife delivers their twins next week. If the right opportunity should open up, Watson may put his pads on one last time.

It’s easy to think that Watson isn’t satisfied with how things ended. He was held out of the 2018 NFC championship game after a scare with appendicitis; Watson stood on the sidelines, helpless, as the Saints were forced to go to untested youngsters Dan Arnold and Garrett Griffin in big moments. If he got another shot at winning a Super Bowl title, it would be more shocking if Watson wasn’t up for the chance.

he Was on a one year contract right? I would take him into camp. He’s a great locker room guy and would be worth a roster spot as a player coach alone. We would get him on the field enough to make it worth it.
He is one player I would bet doesn’t care about money at all in this point of his career.
We shouldn’t have ever let him go to Baltimore in the first place.

I'm sure he's tempted, but the older you get, the harder it is to get into and maintain the peak physical condition that is required for NFL pro football. A guy Watson's age has to work a lot harder at it during the off season, than a younger guy who's 23 or 24. We'll see if Watson can catch on somewhere and make a roster.

I agree with this and it's the reason I'd rather him not try to come back.

Watson was able to retire in relatively good health. I would hate to see him suffer a hard injury trying to play one more year. Get out while you can and enjoy life with your family, we only have so much time on earth.

I think Mr. Unger will stay retired. His body has taken a lot of punishment over the years. I'm glad he chose his health as #1 priority.

Enjoy your retirement.

Did Watson retire to get out of contract obligations or was he on a 1 yr.

One year deal. If you retire with years left on your contract then the team you were signed with still owns your rights if you want to come back. Marshawn Lynch, for example, retired and when he came back the Seahawks traded him where he wanted to go.

Not that many viable TE's. A few then it falls off a cliff. They normally don't come around until 25-26 years old. Jimmy was a fluke. It rarely happens.

Watson can still play if he's in shape but we are good with Cook. Willing to bet he has the best year of his career under Brees. He will be wide open most of the time with Kamara and MT to cover.

Unfortunate for Ben.

He assumed he would stay retired & followed his doctor's orders.

Gave a thorough explanation and accepted his suspension.

Ben is a very respectful person. Wish him well on his return.

Probably 90% of whatever is on the NFL's Performance Enhancing Substances list has no material affect toward actually "enhancing performance". Many are simply substances that can possibly mask something else, but on their own can be beneficial in other ways.

I'm a new convert to CBD oil. The stuff is great. And I'll bet it is no longer against the rules in the NFL by next season.

I was scheduled for an ESI (epidural steroid injection) next Wednesday because of new pain in upper spine. Basically it knocks out inflammation and reduces pain. I started out on CBD last Saturday and am going to cancel the procedure. The pain is gone that was there for weeks.
