Amazing Generation. While it's not that far a flight to the coast, heroic the pilot made sure he dropped the crew at the base and THEN safely swung that big plane in that condition safely out to sea...
My Dad's Shriners Clown Unit would meet at our house and I'd hear stories like this from veterans all the time; Guadalcanal, D-Day, Bastogne, Iwo Jima - as I've gotten older, my appreciation has grown... |

Champagne region... where my father was born and raised. I also spent many a summer there as a youth before coming to America.

My dad was a Captain in the 102nd "Ozarks" and wounded in the battle of the Ardennes . He was hit by shrapnel just below his left knee and tended to by a captured German doctor. Interestingly I have birth mark that looks like his scar but on my right knee! He didn't speak much of his war experience. I became interested in WWII while doing research on his outfit.
