Malcom Brown focused on transformation into dual-threat defensive tackle

In 2019, Malcom Brown has been part of two organizations led by the two longest-tenured head coaches in the league, quarterbacked by the two oldest field generals in the NFL and who tied for the league lead in wins over the past two seasons.

Another similarity? The Patriots and Saints are both eager to make room for NFL players who don’t quite fit a mold (see: Taysom Hill and Danny Etling).

But Brown, a soft-spoken, important defensive tackle signing in this offseason, isn’t here to help the “The Saints are so similar to the Patriots, they’re bound to win the Super Bowl soon” trope, because that’s just not how he sees the game.

In fact, Brown doesn’t see much at all that doesn’t fit within his tunnel vision. And even then, the Texas alumnus and two-time Super Bowl champ doesn’t even see objects in front of him the same way you and I might.

When asked about facing much-talked-about rookie center Erik McCoy on Sunday in the team’s first practice with pads, Brown knew nothing more than there was a rather large black jersey in his way.

“I don’t look at numbers,” said Brown when asked about ‘facing No. 78’. “I’m worried about what I’m supposed to do on defense. Whatever they do on offense, I’ve got to react to it, but I don’t worry about much beyond my defensive plays and what I have to do our there and our whole defense as a team.”

And how about that historically successful quarterback-head coach relationship he spent four years with in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and how it compares to the one that resides in New Orleans? Brown simply sees the red jersey he’s been groomed not to tackle in practice.

Interesting spin. Hope he’s not a knuckle head

Awesome to see him grasping more than one spot this fast.

Malcolm Brown "fits" that elite role as a space-eater who will shine in our 4-3 defense versus the 3-4 where he faced double teams on nearly every play and was still effective in New England.

Big upgrade over T Davison.

Soft ball questions. How about how he likes his bacon, favorite wing place in NO, cajun dishes.
