I'm afraid you do not understand cap dynamics.

And we're going to have a cap that is likely to be $25M higher than it is today, along with several contracts that can be restructured and roster bonuses that can be converted into signing bonuses, ect. The whole cap game has changed tremendously over the past ten years or so

If you make a habit of refusing to pay players and not showing a semblance of loyalty to those that have produced for you at an elite level than you run the risk of free agents not wanting to play for you. I’m fine with this.

Exactly. It wasn't that many years ago that the Saints had trouble getting free agents to even answer their phones and roster players counting their days toward free agency.

I was listening to a sports talk guy on the radio here in Denver. He was saying the Saints shouldn't pay him with all the weapons Brees had. He mentioned Ginn, Austin Carr, Cook, and Trequan Smith who had an outstanding rookie season. It's amazing people get paid to talk about things they actually don't watch or know anything about.

People are crazy. Sometimes I think fans would prefer to just field a team that’s a revolving door of undrafted rookies. It’s OK to have a great player.

not counting Cook, the other 3 combined for 54 catches.

Not until next year with Kamara and it will wok out again. No worries.

Our whole division is loaded with pass catchers to hang with us. The NFC South is the Taj Mahal of pass catchers. Julio, Evans, MT, Kamara, Howard, Mcafferrey, Samuel blah blah, DJ Moore, Calvin Ridley...this division is stacked with pass catchers. All to compete with the Saints.

Everyone knows the NFC South is the division of playmakers.

So beautiful here, and the weather is like paradise honestly. Greeley just smells like manure due to the vast cattle industry

I'm just glad it's over and the hold out didn't extend into the season. As far as the money goes if you haven't realized by now that Mickey plays the cap like Clapton plays the guitar, you haven't been paying attention. It will work out.

On other sites, the joke about the NFC South has usually been that it's the "all offense, no defense" division. That has kinda changed the last two years with us developing a defense.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to 5 year 100 million extension

He’s going to be essential to this offense post Drew Brees. A young QB is going to need elite receiver like Thomas to throw to as he develops. Drew made a career out of making decent receivers look like Pro Bowlers. That’s not likely to happen again.

I was looking at MT's numbers ...

92 - 1100 yards
104 - 1250 yards
125 - 1400 yards (ridiculous numbers)

And at least 22 TD's to go with it.

MT was our passing offense last year, while the rest couldn't find a way to beat single coverage.

Good for him and congrats on that shiny new contract.

Time to go get it.

I'm assuming this means Drew retires after this year. No way the Saints have 2-20 million players and a 15 million player. I would have much rather signed AK......

I love AK, but he would be easier to replace than Thomas. And Thomas should have a much longer career barring injury.

This isn't 2000, voodoo. Do you not understand the current cap dynamics? Not only can you have two $20M and one $15M player in two years, but it be the norm. Hell, you can easily have four or five $20M players before long. The cap is climbing at around 7% to 8% each year. It is expected that with the new CBA in 2020 will bring an additional huge jump in the cap with the new gambling and online revenues being rolled in. And players will be demanding an even larger piece of the pie.

Payton has been trying to find a Kamara ever since he signed on with the Saints. Reggie Bush fell short, as did Darren Sproles. Others came and left, but there has only been one Alvin Kamara. He cannot be replaced. And he will be affordable in today's new escalating cap environment.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to 5 year 100 million extension

Nick Wright on the First Things First show had a good observation. We had already set ourselves up to sign Thomas to a long-term deal. Thomas had to be part of the thinking when we traded away Brandin Cooks. We know we couldn't afford both of them down the road, and Thomas at that point even clearly appeared to be the more tenacious of the two receivers as well as one that fit our offense best. So we are in good shape for this signing. More I think about it, I am glad we didn't hesitate on doing the deal.

A plus is the Draft cap. We don’t have to pay out of the nose anymore to sign first round picks. At least teams can think ahead 4 years now. Imagine the pickle we would be in picking a QB next year if rookie contracts were still as high as they used to be.

We should be more concerned about Lattimore doing such tbh.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to 5 year 100 million extension

A breakdown of Michael Thomas' record-breaking five-year extension, which is worth between $96.25 million and $100 million in new money and locks him up for a total of six years through 2024: A total of $35.65 million is fully guaranteed (including a $20M signing bonus, a $1.65M base salary in 2019, $11M base salary in 2020 and $3M of his base salary in 2021). Another $24.95M is guaranteed for injury only at the time of signing (including the other $9.6M of his base salary in 2021 and his full base salary of $15.35M in 2022). Both of those salaries become fully guaranteed on the third day of each respective league year. Thomas is also due to receive $200,000 in workout bonuses in both 2021 and 2022 and $250,000 in roster bonuses in 2022. He is due $16.45M in non-guaranteed salary and bonuses in 2023 and $19.7M in 2024. He could also earn an additional $3.75M in escalators if he reaches high-performance incentives in 2022 and 2023. His salary-cap figure is just $6.13M in 2019, rising to $15M in 2020, $16.8M in 2021, $19.8M in 2022, $20.45M in 2023 and $19.7M in 2024.
