RE: A study of depth before training camp

I think we have good depth at RB and along the offensive line. On the o-line especially, the Saints have the choice between players who have started, as recently as last season, a number of guys who are "utility" linemen, and a bunch of young talent in Stinchcomb and the two guys who earned all NFLE honors over the summer.

At WR we should have depth, but don't b/c nobody is willing to step up. With Devery, Poole, Hakim, Gardner, and Lewis we SHOULD be dangerous in an y number of sets, but my guess is that unless Poole steps up and is the physical WR with good hands that we need, the #3 WR spot will continue to be a problem. The same seems true at TE. Boo, Meier, Conwell, Hilton, and Hall should give us some sick options. Instead, it seems to give us inconsistency. If Meier, Boo, and Hilton can play up to potential, then this could be quite a group as well.

QB is our biggest hole in the depth position. Bouman is poo and McPherson is a rookie project. The Saints need to do something about that.

On defense, it's obvious that the team is stacked at DE. S is another position where there is plenty of depth. Most of the other positions are much like the WR/TE positions on offense. Lots of players, but no one that wants to step up. Brown/Thomas/Craft are questionable at the nickel spot. If something happens to McKenzie, we're in trouble at CB. Likewise, we have a hard time finding three starting LBs or the one DT to play next to Young. These are both positions where there are plenty of bodies, but very few good players.
