Missed making in-game comment with our discussion, but this route by Cobbs was really bad-@ss...

He'd be a nice get in the underneath slot routes, if he could only be faster on the outside...

Taysom good
Teddy bad

Ellis is gonna make an impact.

Pretty sure he missed Harris for his stud list.

Saints :... "What position do you play?"

Taysom: ... "Yes" :p

Reading the board last night the overall feel was that we could have done much better. The receivers couldn't get open and the backs weren't showing much either. Apparently, teddy was under the weather....maybe he should have stayed home!

Re: USA Today/Saints Wire: 7 studs and duds from Saints preseason win over Chargers

Teddy definitely sucked, but it was one of those things where there was really nothing that anybody could do, because (1) you can't dare play Brees in preseason game #2 with this current O-line as a patchwork work-in-progress...(2) you can't play Taysom Hill the whole game either (injury risk)....(3) you don't have a journeyman "camp body" #4 backup QB to plug in there, because this team doesn't need a #4 journeyman "camp body" backup QB. So we were stuck with illin' Teddy and his dancing shoes. Burn the film. I'm over it. If Teddy has two more good games in preseason, we know to throw this one out. If he continues to struggle, well then you have a conversation. But if Coach Payton said he was sick, I take his word for it.

The second half with Taysom was one of the most ENTERTAINING halves of preseason Saints football I think I've ever watched!

Harris really stood out. The way he handles punts is electrifying. Felt like he was gonna break one with every return.

I'm confused on this point. The starting O-Line from the game:

Newhouse
Peat
McCoy
Warford
Ramczyk

There's absolutely nothing patchwork about our starting 5 minus Armstead that Brees will be behind next week (with Armstead) and behind on Monday September 9th again with Armstead. That's a configuration the Saints have played a lot of games under in the last 2-3 years.

Did I miss something?

2-3 year configuration except for Armstead? Who ya watching brother?

Newhouse - Came from Panthers in the off season
Warford - Rookie
Not one player you referenced is in the LT depth chart behind Armstead.

Only Peat and Ramczyk have seen actual play time in a Saints jersey in our offense against an opponent.

McCoy didn’t look all that great either. Take a look at our last 5 games last year if you want a glimpse of how they are going to look if things don’t improve.
They will all look better when Armstead is in but we all know how that’s gonna go.

Um, the New Orleans Saints?

That's why I qualified my statement with "except for Armstead".

I believe you have Warford mixed up with McCoy. Here's Warford's signing headline: On March 9, 2017, Warford signed a four-year, $34 million contract with the New Orleans Saints. Before that he played 4 years as a starter in Detroit.

Because just like the last 3 years, Armstead's backup is Peat. When Armstead goes out, Peat slides over and one of interior backups fills in Peat's guard spot.

Here are Warford's snap counts from 2018 (from ProFootballReference):

Larry Warford G 981 93.34%

Brees had 979 snaps last year. So who exactly was playing right guard for the Saints in 2018?

Maybe I should be the one asking the question "Who have you been watching, brother?"

EXACTLY my point, Oak. I trust they will have it together by the season opener, but RIGHT NOW you do not put Brees out there, in PRESEASON, with an O line like that. It'd be insane to do that in a meaningless game. I would not be surprised at all if Brees plays only one series against the Jets. Maybe two series if one of them is a three and out. These games are MEANINGLESS and they can't risk Brees -- the entire franchise -- getting hurt while these guys learn to play together.

The NFL did us no favors either + we had players nicked up on the O line.

3 games in 14 days? Who sets a schedule like that?

That was brutal.

While I do agree that it is paramount to avoid injury, that doesn't mean that preseason isn't meaningless. In addition to talent evaluation, which is clearly the #1 purpose, preseason is an opportunity to practice in a gamelike environment. I'm not sure it's helpful to McCoy for example to get his absolute first game action with Brees starting with the first snap on Monday Night Football kicking off the regular season for example.

The third game has always been the dress rehearsal for the starters. It's the game where virtually everyone starts and plays significant minutes. It's the warm-up for the regular season.

Brees can take care of himself. The starting O-line, except for maybe Armstead, will be out there. This 3rd game is the time for everyone to step up and show they are ready for the regular season.

Any of you played O-Line? I have stated it before, a great Offensive line is more akin to synchronized swimming than individual play.

O-Line is similar to defensive back field. It is not about where everyone is, it is about where everyone thinks everyone else is going to be.

It would be good for everyone's blood pressure to allow the line to gel.

I have and I think your comparison is pretty accurate. Its really a group effort. It doesn't matter if I pick up my defender next to me don't get his guy.

Preseason is almost always shaky for a O-line group. ESPECIALLY with a new center. It takes time before you get all your communication down, phrases and handsigns and whatever else might be used.

Also you need a feel for how the guy next to you moves, how long are his steps, what power does he generate, stuff that will help you know where you need to get to. Even if you played with the guy next to you last year things changes in an offseason. You might have gotten slower, the guy nex to you faster and so on.

Never played pro level but you guys are right. But the center is your backbone of the O- line he needs to recognize the D’s set he’ll call out a scheme that he sees it matters only for what he sees at the instant. The D shifts on his assessment . The tackles start pointing fingers he’s mine to the guards . Here’s what happens next. DO YOUR JOB.

The way a O-line works doesn't really differ between the levels of play, its just added layers of complexion. More plays and formations, defences better at disguising things. The core stuff is still the same thou.
