The Saints reached an agreement Tuesday with rookie defensive tackle Jason Jefferson, a sixth-round pick from Wisconsin, according to his agent, Ron Slavin.

Jefferson is the first of the team's seven draft picks to reach a deal. He agreed to a three-year deal with minimum salaries of $230,000 in 2005, $310,000 in 2006 and $385,000 in 2007. The contract includes a $69,500 signing bonus.

Jefferson, the No. 193 overall pick, is expected to compete with second-year tackle Rodney Leisle and veteran reserves Willie Whitehead and Tony Bryant for a roster spot behind starting tackles Howard Green and Brian Young.

Jefferson, 6 feet 1, 306 pounds, was considered one of the top run defenders in the draft. He was a three-year starter at Wisconsin, where he teamed with Anttaj Hawthorne and Erasmus James to form one of the best defensive lines in college football.

Negotiations have begun with most of the team's other six draft picks, including first-round right tackle Jammal Brown and second-round safety Josh Bullocks. Talks with both, however, are in the initial stages and probably won't be finalized until the final days of July.

The lengths of the contracts are expected to follow the same pattern as in previous years. The first-round pick will receive a five-year deal. The second-round pick will get a four-year deal. The rest of the group will receive three-year contracts.

The Saints have a pool of a little more than $3.6 million to sign their seven rookies.

The club is not expected to sign fourth-round pick Chase Lyman until late in camp. Lyman is rehabilitating from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He is expected to be sidelined for at least another three or four months.

As in past years, the Saints will divide the duties of rookie contract negotiations between various front-office personnel.

Senior football administrator Russ Ball is negotiating the deals for Brown and Bullocks. He also negotiated the Jefferson deal.

General Manager Mickey Loomis will oversee negotiations for third-round pick Alfred Fincher.

Director of player personnel Rick Mueller is negotiating the contract for Lyman and fifth-round pick Adrian McPherson.

Director of player development Ricky Porter is working the deal for seventh-round draft pick Jimmy Verdon.

No mention of Sullivan at all. did they forget about him, hear somethign we didn't, know something? I just found that interesting he is not eve mentioned when they talk about the DTs.

Why ar eyou surprised at that? It appears to me that the Saints have recognized that Sullivan is a bust of the 1st degree. I won't be surprized if he is traded or even cut this year. He is taking up cap room and has the money in hand, so why bother. He's another of LoomBoom's "projects" that has turned sour. But he was "fast!!" Sadly, we are all fired up about Brooks and his incompetence, when we should be angry and upset at the organization as a whole. My major emphasis for the poor or at best, mediocre performance of this team both on Offense and Defense is on the Front office and the Player Personnel department. Hazlett has been saddled with players who LoomBoob thinks that he can get on the cheap.

I believe that you saw this happen with Deuce last year. His spirit was tried when he was put into a system that he knew was not going to work, but they did it anyway. Consequently, he was injured and pounded for no reason. There went some leadership. Horn was hurt, Stallworth is immature, Brooks shows up half the time and then shoots off his mouth about his greatness, and on and on.

Sullivan may show up at training camp, but he is going to be way way back in the roster. There are others there who WANT to play football not collect a check.

RDOX, I carry your sentiment about the front office and coaches as well, believe me I do. I think there should have been a house cleaning two years ago, but DEFINITELY last year. If there was any time we could have snuck up on the NFC and done well it was last year. Think about it: we beat winless Arizona and winless Tampa Bay, we are at least 10-6. Someone should have had their arses handed to them for that. The NFC was HORRENDOUS last year outside of Philly. Does anyone seriously believe we are gonna get a better crack at it? There have been too many mistakes in the Haslett/Loomis regime, and nothing short of winning the Superbowl will make me forget them. Just like I think we are capped on how far we can go with AB as our starter, I think we are definitely capped with how far we can go with Haz as our coach, and Loomis handling personnel decisions. Money is one thing, judging talent is another.

See people read things like it came from the organization... sometimes Joe Schmucketeli sitting in NY writes something by looking at a stat or roster without even knowing what really is going on with the team.

..that's a good catch, Whodi... Sullivan is so out of my mind that I wouldn't have gotten it without you pointing it out.. and Duncan is the beat Saints writer for the TP... interesting...

I saw the same thing when I read the paper at work this morning. I was very surprised when I didn't see Sullivan's name mentioned either. We really haven't heard too much on him during this offseason either. Could something be in the works? I wish we could get some more info about his offseason workouts. As much as I love to root for young players/rookies (and I mean LOVE), even my patiences on him is running out. Hopefully he doesn't turn into another Jamal Reynolds... if anyone even knows who that guy is. So much potential... but we all know how that p word can just bite you in the ass.

Sullivan will come around this year
