Bill Vinovich, the Saints-Rams no-call referee, is the NFL's best official, ESPN says
Bill Vinovich, the head official in the controversial Saints-Rams NFC championship game, is the crew chief that most "inspires confidence that he knows what he's doing," according to ESPN NFL writer Kevin Seifert.
Seifert ranked Vinovich first in his list of top 10 referees in the league, part of a preview list by ESPN leading up to the start of the season. "His crews usually average the fewest penalties per game in the league, producing crisp games with maximum focus on players and coaches," Seifert said in his reasoning. https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.town...ze=1700%2C1133 Last season, Vinovich's crew failed to flag a pass interference or roughness penalty against Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman for his helmet-to-helmet hit on receiver Tommylee Lewis well before a pass arrived. The no-call came at a crucial point in the game against the New Orleans Saints. The Rams won and advanced to the Super Bowl. more on NOLA |

So that’s the criteria for being a good ref, calling the fewest penalties?
So basically you a ref can become number 1 by not doing their job. Makes total sense. Look I’m all for letting teams play and letting penalties slide as long as it’s not one sided. What pisses me off is when they let one team slide and call penalties against the other team when it’s convenient. Blatant penalties that go uncalled should not happen to ANY team. Helmet to helmet no calls are just downright hypocritical. As big a deal as they made about the helmet rule last offseason I expected a lot more but 9/10 times it didn’t get called. Fining a player after the fact just proves the refs didn’t do their job. Player safety my ass. In 3 years time this game won’t be worth watching. |

The #1 projectile vomit non call(s) of ALL TIME. As we use to say in the Marines..EAD. A lot more going on behind the curtain. If anyone believes that was a slight error, they would also believe used condoms under their bed were sausage casings the Mrs flicked under there after a morning brunch.

In all fairness, I can't fault Vinovich for the non call. His job is not looking down field at the play. It's watching the QB and line play. The blame is on the 2 azzwads that were less than 10 yards from the play that didn't make the right call. Also we have to remember, that wasn't his crew but a so called
allstar crew. He has been a pretty good official in the past. |

Re: Bill Vinovich, the Saints-Rams no-call referee, is the NFL's best official, ESPN says
I am so sick of hearing about this.
All the playoff ref crews are made up of various different refs into all star crews. They are also notorious about "letting them play" in the playoffs and not throwing a bunch of flags. Vinovich's crew is probably fine in the regular season. This isn't a big grand conspiracy. So freaking tired of hearing about the non-call. DON'T blow a 13 point lead and 10 point lead IN THE SAME GAME, then throw an interception in OT and we wouldn't be sitting here sounding insane with conspiracy theories (As if Goodell is really smart enough to pull something off like that). The sad thing is, if the corner had been watching the ball on the non-call play, it would've been an easy INT and then maybe we would be discussing why we called 2 pass plays instead of running it and forcing the Rams to burn their timeouts. When I went back and re-watched that game recently, even Troy Aikman pointed out how it was a poorly thrown pass that could've been picked off. But beyond that, we won the coin toss in OT and then immediately turned it over. Our offense did not have a good game. IMO if Arnold don't drop the TD in the endzone early and we go up 17-0, we win all the way. Lost in all this nonsense is that I think coach Payton called a bad game in both of our playoff matches. They fiddled around with the Eagles by constantly shooting themselves in the foot with dumb penalties on offense (not counting the early turnovers and not establishing the run), allowing Philly to hang around despite our defense dominating them. If not for Jeffrey's dropped pass, we're probably one and done and not even talking about the refs. Against the Rams, our play calling was absolutely confusing in the 4th quarter and by OT, it looked like their defense had completely figured us out. I am just so sick of hearing about that non-call. I'm afraid that rule change pushed over it will end up causing more harm than good. I don't want to ever hear about the non-call again if/when that rule change comes back around and we lose a close game due to it. |
