Teddy Bridgewater will get paid this offseason

It is said that the most popular guy on the team is the backup quarterback because every time fans get disgruntled about the starter, they imagine life with his backup running the show instead.

But it's a be-careful-what-you-wish-for season in the NFL, with 42 quarterbacks having started games in the first five weeks. Some are doing fine. Some are not. Some are getting hurt and leaving things in the hands of the third-stringers.

Teddy Bridgewater is 3-0.

When Drew Brees injured his thumb in the Saints' ugly Week 2 loss to the Rams, there was some degree of concern in New Orleans about Super Bowl dreams ending early. But Bridgewater, the highest-paid backup quarterback in the league for a reason, has stepped in and guided the Saints to victories over the Seahawks, Cowboys and Buccaneers. The Saints sit at 4-1, Brees is already posting videos of himself throwing the ball, and it appears that New Orleans is in position to stay even better than afloat during its Hall of Famer's absence.

We begin this week's Overreaction Monday column in the Big Easy, with Touchdown Teddy.

There are backup QB's that have done much less and got paid. I salute Payton for this move. We stole a Pro Bowl QB and are extracting all the good mojo out of him. There is no reason he can't go undefeated until the CPT gets back. He will be worth a king's ransom end of season.

I could see us getting 2-3 early round picks if this continues.

Matt Ryan ... garbage stats.

They were blown out.

His family is now admitting he was adopted. They are willing to take DNA test to prove it. They tried to do something honorable but unfortunately sometimes, there is a reason why children are put up for adoption.

He's going to be a free agent, so they'd have to trade him before the deadline, if they are going to get picks for him. Obviously that will not happen, given the current situation.

Hard to tell at this point if he'll be a hot commodity.

If he goes 5-0 while Brees is out, then yes just based on the record he'll get attention. But he'll have to produce at please 1 more day like yesterday to get the big bucks.

It's looking more and more like a QB controversy.

Kamara sure has got the goods on those touch passes.

QB controversy for where he's going to end up next season?

Because I know you don't mean when Drew Brees gets healthy.

Yes I meant when Brees is healthy. Kamara has shown with 1 pass he has Drew, Teddy & Taysom beat.

Seriously, though, are we keeping Drew or Teddy? A question I'm good with tabling until March 2020.

So you think when Drew is healthy that the Saints have to decide between Drew and Teddy?

Or at worst, you're wondering if we should sign a contract with a Drew Brees willing to keep playing in 2020 vs telling him to go away because we are moving forward with Bridgewater at some crazy high contract (north of $20 million most likely)?

Bridgewater is better than alot of starting QBs.

But alot of the starting QBs currently are being trained so to speak to be better than what Bridgewater can offer. Most likely wont pan out for most teams, someone will take that into consideration and pay him. Team like Redskins for example could bite, maybe Dolphins.

When Brees is healthy Brees will play.

As for the other, it's gonna be a tough decision I'm glad I don't have to make. Teddy is a young talented QB better than a lot of Week 5 starters. Brees will be a year older but one of the greatest QBs ever. We can and do win with both.

Isn't Hill a FA after this season as well?!

I think he might get some intriguing offers coming his way.

Coming to and staying with the Saints has worked out perfectly for everyone involved. Will Teddy take a guaranteed $60 million to start for a bad team or $10 million to stay with the Saints? I could also see the Saints going with Hill and saving the money. I can't fault Teddy either way. I mean Pittsburgh could move on from Ben. The Titans might not pay Mariota. The Panthers and Bucs could move forward with a new guy. Everyone else is locked in to draft Tua or go with what they have. It's going to be interesting.

It's a fascinating conversation, but I am choosing to just live in the moment and enjoy every minute of it. Teddy is here, Drew is here, Taysom is here. This is truly the Golden Age of Saints football, folks. Enjoy!

ETA: If Teddy goes somewhere else next year and gets the big bucks, that's great for him. I don't feel possessive about him, I am simply living in the here and NOW. Savor life while it's happening. This is beautiful stuff!

Best case scenario is we win it all and Brees walks away from the game on top. That way we walk into the 2020 season with our leader who knows the system and his proven himself in Bridgewater and a quality insurance policy in Taysom Hill.

All 3 QBs will be free agents in 2020... it's going to be a wild off season.

We will not have the money to keep Drew and Teddy next year, but if Drew gets another ring I think he retires. I still fully believe that Hill is better than Teddy. I won't be surprised to see Hill as the starter next year given the high amount of $$$ that will be thrown at Teddy from some desperate team.

Hill has already shown he's got the stronger of the arms; Brees can stay as long as he wants; Teddy will sign with another team and fetch us a 3rd Rd compensatory pick that will allow us to upgrade our offensive line...

And we will continue to roll...

Brees has already stated that winning another Super Bowl would not be a factor in his retiring. He has repeatedly stated that as long as he is still enjoying preparing for and playing the game at a high level he has no plans of retiring anytime soon. And I will guarantee those lifetime records that Brady is pressing him on are also a factor. He will not retire until he is leading those categories and that will have to be AFTER Brady retires himself.

Teddy will be playing elsewhere next year. Drew should win his third Super bowl next year and Taysom will be his back up....although, there is the possibility that Payton brings in his guy. That'll be either some back up that he likes or a young gun coming out of college.
