WR Scouts

All the hype on a couple of free agents darlings and here we are. Week six and nothing. Nothing from them and nothing from anyone else but MT and Ginn. Insane. Who are these scouts. No way they are gainfully employed after this season.

How did they miss on Preston Williams. Yes, he plays for Miami but look at his stuff. The big man is making AB level catches with garbage throws. Complete trash throws but he makes something of it, keeps his feet inbound.

We are winning but MT and Ginn need help. Especially if Kamara is hurt. I don't see anybody we have that is going to step up. Humprey is too slow to get separation. Carr, not even sure what he does at this point. Can we at least cut him and make a move on someone.

To put it bluntly, If MT goes down it's over. The season is literally over for us.

Sometimes I think we might be making too much of not having a standout #2 WR. Remember the 49ers in their Jerry Rice heyday? Can you tell me off the top of your head the 2nd WR on those teams? I think perhaps it was JJ Stokes, but he was nothing special.

My point is this - good football is throwing to the open man. When you have a WR who is extraordinary in the league in his ability to run great routes and get open and catches everything, his stats are going to make everyone else's look tiny. But what are you going to do? Spread the ball to receivers that aren't as open when Can't Guard Mike is the most open? Hell no, you have to hit Mike in that situation.

We need a better run game to open up the rest. Our O- line also looks a little shaky to me.

John Taylor was a legit #2 WR with Rice for many years.

During that time Taylor could have been a legit WR1 for a couple of teams in the NFL.

Something tells me Dez Bryant will sign with the Saints during the bye week. If not Dez, I do feel a move is coming for a veteran WR. I just hope it's not a situation that necessitates giving up a high round draft pick.

Humphrey got several snaps and ran his decoy patterns really well. :)

Trust in the coaches and front office.

BUT if we are honest. Except for MT and a few others here and their, we don't draft WR too well

It is our whole pro scouting department that needs to clean house.

Other than MT I don't recall another WR in the Payton era we drafted that had any staying power. Cooks maybe but he starting crying and that was that. Kamara is basically a WR I guess but a lot of lean years at WR from the actual draft without question.

Re: WR Scouts

I sometimes wonder if they are scouting/recruiting receivers based on Brees -- Brees being a short guy (6'0", cough cough) with the laser accuracy, but he's often throwing in a lane, or from basically a low point behind the wall of the O line and D line with their hands raised up to bat the ball down. I sometimes feel like they are intentionally looking for tall guys with long wingspans, who can go up high and get balls or dive down low and get them, when Drew makes those targeted throws, where the announcers always say "Drew put it right where only his guy can get it."

Maybe they are looking at body types, arm length and catching style, focusing on those type of measurables that suit Drew, especially height, and maybe some of those types are what are causing the "busts" or the guys who don't ever stick or get traction with the team.

Jersey Boy who I had the pleasure of playing sandlot football with in the day. His High School coach at Pennsauken High said that he wasn't 'fast enough' to play WR on the team... To quote him after the game winning TD against the Bengals in SB XXII, "Just goes to show you what I know about football!" LOL
