The Saints were without a first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. That didn't stop them from landing one of its best players in Erik McCoy.

In trading up to snag the big man from Texas A&M at No. 48 overall, New Orleans not only acquired its immediate successor to the retired Max Unger, but a player who's outperformed all but four of the 47 players chosen ahead of him, according to midseason rookie rankings from Yahoo! Sports.

"The Saints landed a first-round talent in McCoy to ease the retirement of Max Unger," says the breakdown. "McCoy is becoming one of the NFL's best young centers."

Coming in on the list at No. 6, here are the players who slotted ahead of McCoy:

EDGE Nick Bosa (Ohio State), San Francisco 49ers, No. 2 overall
DT Dexter Lawrence (Clemson), New York Giants, No. 17 overall
WR Terry McLaurin (Ohio State), Washington Redskins, No. 76 overall

This has been a hell of a pick. He might end up being a better player than Max at a lot cheaper price.

I have always had an immense amount of respect for Payton with the OL. Normally can't have both lines stellar but the OL, he has always tried to make it as good as possible. At least with a good OL you are never out of the game.

Choose one line and make it super strong. Gonna win at least half the games with that mentality.

I know that it's a smaller sample size but Chauncy Gardner Johnson has been pretty great in the two games that he's played in as well.

and we won't get any credit for it. All the talk will be about the Cowboys' super amazing o-line that still gives up a ton of sacks.

Not sure if you had a chance to glance at the report JP sent on last week.

Marcus is actually playing well for us. On 13 targets, he's only allowed 51 yards and a passer rating of 42.9. By comparison he was at 116 last year.

He's definitely improved in year 3. I'd be careful letting a young, promising player with tremendous upside walk.

McCoy has made me so grateful that Nick Easton isn't our starting center. He's another swing and a miss by the free agent scouting department.

I think Easton was the best available at a time when the team wasn't sure what we had.
Not a bad FA - just best available. Plus it gives us some depth.

McCoy was an awesome pick that should reap benefits for years to come! :bng:
