What the hell?! I’m legitimately shocked right now.

Idk understand what's there to be shocked about? There's more to life than football especially for players like LB taking blows every play. Good for him go enjoy your family

Re: Kuechly Retires

He had the concussion history plus he'd have to adjust to a whole new coaching staff. Don't blame him TBH.

It was just out of left field. You’re right though... those concussions must have scared him big time. I’ll never forget Kuechly being carted off the field crying and looking terrified after another concussion.

Went out on his terms....all anyone can ever hope to. Enjoyed watching him play, appreciated his tenacity, ferocity on the field. Good for him.

Not surprised but glad Luke is walking away on his own terms.

Enjoy retirement and good health.

Great player that I loved watching. Seems to be a quality person to. Smart that he walks away while he still can, concussions is not to be taken lightly.

Re: Kuechly Retires

One, this is beyond a blow (huge, major, whatever) to that defense. He was the best player on the field, by far.

Two, kudos for him to walk away, but...

Three, I won't be remotely surprised to see him looking for work in 2021 with a non**** team

Kuechly Retires

Luke was a solid as a pick in the draft class as ever. What’s weird is Andrew luck was the #1 overall - retired also . RG3 back up Trent Richardson. Retired. Matt kalil done Justin Blackmon prison? Ryan Tannehill. Ooooh yea. Now this is the saints 2012 draft class
Alien hicks—3rd rd
Nick Toon—— 4th rd
Corey White —5th rd
Andrew Tiller—6th rd
Marcel Jones—7th rd
That’s right no first or 2 nd rd picks thanks Mark Ingram in 2011 .

Re: Kuechly Retires

I think he sees the writing on the wall... going to be rebuilding for a few years. What’s the point of taking a beating every week for a team going back to the building phase.

Really hurts Carolina, they have no QB on offense or defense now.

This rings true to me. Ding. Ding. I believe we have a winner!

Re: Kuechly Retires

Good to see him putting his health over the money. Better him walk away with his mind than end up in a wheelchair being spoon fed. A concussion really is bad but multiple concussions over an 8 year period, that's scary.

Re: Kuechly Retires

Andrew Luck
Luke Kuechly
Patrick Willis
Chris Borland
Gronk
Mega tron etc ...

You'll continue to see more athletes retiring before age 30.

The NFL is a violent game and a daily grind.

** EDIT Add Saints Zach Line as of today (1/15/20).

Perhaps the most important factor is the money. Players today are making generational money within their first several years. There is no need to play any longer. Past generations of NFL players were forced to play well past the point of permanent damage just to maximize their earnings. The desires to reach greater non-monetary goals are outweighed by their desires to limit future health.

On the other end of the spectrum are players like Brees and Brady. Both have already accumulated generational wealth, yet continue to wish to play. They are no longer in it for the money. Both play a position, especially under today's rules, that virtually eliminates that "point of permanent damage" that I mentioned earlier. That doesn't mean that they should be expected to agree to some ridiculous "team friendly" deal. They should expect to still receive a fair market value, but are definitely not holding their teams ransom as mentioned elsewhere.

What a terrible draft class!

Speaking of which, this has to change the Panthers strategy for the 2020 draft.

Could be however I think Luke's body is breaking down and he's had 10 concussions over his brilliant career.

One would have to wonder if he's been evaluated by numerous doctors and the consensus all believe the trauma to the brain is just too much long term.

CTE is a monster.

Klein did well subbing for LK. Let's send them AJ and Ginn for C-Mac

When he cried on the field after a head injury, I HOPED that would be the end for him. God Bless Him. I just don't see it ending well with him. Hope I'm wrong.

I agree with you, he doesn't look the same, I hope he is able to have a good post-football life. That time you are referring to gave me chills, and not in a good way. Poor guy, talk about leaving it all on the field. He certainly did.

He doesn't want to coach ... at least no time in the near future. From what I have heard he wants to be with family and enjoy himself hunting and fishing for a few years before making any other decisions.
