Sean Payton: I’m a dummy, I don’t know if this is Drew Brees’ last year

Saints coach Sean Payton inadvertently stepped in it regarding Drew Brees‘ future plans yesterday, and today Payton is trying to clean up the mess he made.

Payton said on ESPN yesterday that Brees “announced he’s coming back for his final season.” But Brees has not announced that 2020 will be his final season. On a call with reporters today, Payton said he just misspoke.

“I’m a big dummy,” Payton said.

Payton said that his understanding is Brees won’t decide until the end of the 2020 season whether to return for 2021.

“I think his plan is to take it year by year,” Payton said.

Another effect of the virus. Cough, fever, red eyes and dummy statements.

Yeah well it shows you what Payton’s thinking though that even he feels like this is it.

Guess this needs to merge with thread that says Brees back for final season.

Or maybe we like seeing SP call himself a dummy!

Or he could be exhausted from being sick and wasn't thinking about what he said.

Maybe the Corona confused Payton enough that he thought that yesterday was April Fools!

This does make me feel better though. I was sad over it.

I’m glad he’s with us this year but depending on how he plays I could feel different next year.

I saw the interview live, on March 31st. It wasn't a joke at the time he said it. I really was surprised.

Believing the follow up to the original makes 0 sense outside of choosing to believe one over the other because it is what you want to be true.

His statement was clear, Drew's last year and we are ready to move on. Now there are three possible true meanings from this. 1. He means it. He sees decline and is ready for a new QB who gives him multiple uses. 2. He is saying it to keep TH motivated that, yeah, hang in there you're day is coming. 3. He is motivating Drew by questioning him and basically saying yeah he's done after this year.

Any of the three are as viable as the next, but his statement wasnt an awww shucks I'm a dummy. It had plenty of meaning.

I tend to think he is hinting to Drew the time is coming and at the same time motivating him for the season. I genuinely believe he sees TH as a starter and wants to use him. And I 100 percent he believes Drew's best days are behind him.

My spider senses tell me TH is not that dude. Either the Saints will draft that guy later this month, or he's currently on another roster.

Until the Saints staff remove Taysom from special teams duty all together, I just don't see him as the #2 or heir apparent to #9.

Sean would make a great politician though :D.

He is a great motivator. I havent thought he was the heir either...I just dont think he is accurate enough. Time will tell.

I love Sean but I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth when he talks to the media. Bill Parcells was the same way and was also his mentor.

Here's the question to sincerely ask yourself...it is 2009 and we have TH on the roster, you really believe we are pulling Drew from plays? No way. It is telling and pretending that doesnt matter is exactly that, pretending

Jeaux Burreaux on his second contract?

Wishful thinking ;).

The Bungaloos will probably hold him (see A.J. Green) captive.

Likey Mclike Like.

Remember that outside linebacker we signed that Dallas released like back in 2014 or 2015. Payton said he had a knee bruise and he'd be fine. Next day hes on IR with an ACL tear...

Brees is amazing and will always be the best player weve ever had and it's not meant as a criticism of Brees, he's just getting older and is not as dynamic and dominant as he once was.

The funny thing is, NFL Network is streaming games from years ago and you can see the difference in Brees' game. The way he navigates and steps up in the pocket was pretty incredible to watch, he had zip on his passes and could throw deep.

Not bashing Brees, just being a realist.

Theres a reason his Interception numbers are down, because he doesnt throw deep anymore. When he tries to throw deep, it gets picked - 2018 playoffs vs eagles, 2019 playoffs vs Vikings.

TH adds something to the field that's needed, because Brees isnt the player he once was. Defenses dont respect our deep passes, because we cant make them.

Re: Sean Payton: I’m a dummy, I don’t know if this is Drew Brees’ last year

Does anybody else remember Drew Brees adamantly stating that he would never let his back up see the field? He even wanted to play in garbage time. Some of that is chasing the records possibly but he never wanted to come out of a game. Didn't he break his own record for consecutive starts?

It's funny how time gives us a different outlook as we get older. Maybe Drew realizes that he can't carry the team on his shoulders alone anymore and is a team player willing to do whatever it takes to win. Personally, I'm proud of him for sharing snaps with Taysom Hill and keeping the game more complex for the defense.

I hear that Brittany sleeps in Taysom Hill pajamas....she probably stole them from Drew. :broccoli:

He's a stud and one of the best ever. What he has done with his height is literally amazing. I love the guy and we dont sniff a Lombardi without him. Absolutely best player we have ever had. Still great, but he is getting older.

That throw, if I'm being honest, seemed to be more about matching the big play from TH earlier.

Really hoping sanders has a huge impact for us this year
