Supplemental Draft
Anyone been listening to some of the talking heads/Experts about this?
Talk that with college football maybe been further away than the NFL from starting again that those eligible for this year's draft but stayed in college might decide to try and declare for the supplemental draft Interesting |
Re: Supplemental Draft
I’ve never understood the supplemental draft. Can you explain how it works?
I don’t remember hearing we acquired anyone of note through it. |

The supplemental draft is held every year after the regular draft in April. It's concept is based on prospects who did not enter the regular draft and want to submit their name to play in the NFL right away. The most common case occurs when a collegiate player is ruled ineligible for the upcoming season after the regular draft, which, without the supplemental draft, would leave him in limbo for an entire year. If a player wants to be included in the supplemental draft, a formal petition needs to be filed with the league and not every player is guaranteed admittance. Players need to be at least three years removed from high school to be eligible for the supplemental draft. How does it work? The supplemental draft order is different from the regular draft order. Teams are separated into three groups based on the previous season; the first group are non-playoff teams that had six or fewer wins. The second group are non-playoff teams with more than six wins. And the final group are playoff teams. The order in those groups are determined by a weighted lottery with the teams with the fewest wins given the best chance to win the earliest picks. Bids for players are submitted blindly by teams with the round that given team would want to select a given player. Obviously, the team highest in the draft order who submits the earliest-round bid for a player will be awarded that player. When that happens, that club forfeits a pick in the same round of next year's regular draft. |
Re: Supplemental Draft
Is there even room on the roster to supplement it? If a CB was there we loved then yeah. Borrow against next years draft for this year....we already have a habit of doing that. So, why not?
On the other hand, we may finally try to go into a draft with all of our picks since we will receive a couple of comp picks this year. Not only that we can still move a player(Warford) for picks next year when we need to reload talent or pay big contracts. |

There have only been 46 players drafted in the supplemental draft since it was established in 1977. Cris Carter was easily the most famous. Dallas has drafted by far the most with five. No other franchise has drafted more than three, I believe. |

BY ROBERT KLEMKO S.I.
2006 Saints Draft Seventh Round 210th overall pick: Zach Strief, OT, Northwestern 252nd overall pick: Marques Colston, foreverf WR, Hofstra (suppmental compensatory selection) A quick Google search unearths some vintage fan skepticism over the compensation. Poster an on the Saints forum blackandgold.com Foreverfan lamented late that March that “#44 in the 7th round guys... that's the 252nd pick in the draft. We could do better signing rookie free agents to contracts.” By virtue of picking second overall, the Saints drafted 252nd overall and landed the man who would become the franchise’s all-time leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns. Colston has eclipsed 900 yards receiving in eight of his nine seasons and has 72 career touchdowns and 58 catches in the playoffs, including seven catches for 83 yards in the Super Bowl XLIV victory over Indianapolis. Perhaps more remarkable than achieving all that as a 252nd pick, he’s never been named to a Pro Bowl.
