Saints worst draft bust of all-time?

Well, I haven't gone back into any archives from the 80's or 90's, but the only player that stands out most is RB, Ricky Williams. Could you imagine if this Saints team drafted Albert Hainesworth, or Tony Mandrich etc.

I'm only going by when I first started following them week to week in 2000, so for that time frame it's 2003 with DT Johnathan Sullivan. Such a bust.

Trading our 2 first round picks that year away to move up to select him, then have other DL's in Kevin Williams and Terrell Suggs both go just 4 picks after Sullivan, will always make that sting extra hard.

But from his healthy scratch days, the media mentioned Sullivan was at least a GOAT of the buffet line..so there's that.

Stanley Jean Baptiste . Coaches saw size and length, assumed he would become Richard Sherman 2.0. A player drafted that high, should have some sort of impact & not be cut after a year. Sean P had very little patience for SJB. All I saw is a younger version of Brandon Browner.

Just an awful draft selection.

Ohio State linebackers went with back-to-back picks in the first round of the 1974 NFL Draft. New Orleans took Rick Middleton, who played five indistinguishable years in the league for the Saints and San Diego with the 13th pick, and Denver took Randy Gradishar with the 14th pick. Who went on to be voted the 8th greatest player in Ohio State history as well the top 100 college players.

Russell Erxleben. I'm still mad about that one.

Alex Molden is up there for me. All the talent in the world but played way off receivers. I recall during games announcers would always point it out. How he stayed in the league so long no idea.

Recently, Nick Toon. Had injuries but even before that, totally not worth where he was drafted.

Gonna go with Sullivan too. Considering what they gave up for him.

Re: Saints worst draft bust of all-time?

Sullivan started some games, yes?

So, Stanley Jean Baptist comes from the 2nd round (leading LSU homer WR Landry) to win it all...at the tape

Then there's LB Fortt in the 4th, OT Took in the 6th (same year)...ugh. And those scouting them took years to get themselves fired.

Love where we are now!

We paid a high price for Ricky Williams and he did nothing near what we thought he would.

Sully here. I remember Hasslet saying he picked him because he had a “nastiness” he brought to the table. Instead he just ate everything on the table.

We used the 11th pick in the draft on a kicker!!! I still remember Cowboy fans laughing at us.

Punter, in the first round, 11th overall pick...

Granted we had Archie Manning, but Joe Montana went in the third round!

Kellen Winslow went 13th overall, two picks later...

Mark Gastineau went 41st overall, in the second round...

Another Notables in the Draft:

KR/CB Roy Green, who converted to WR and had a HOF-worthy career...

OT Max Montoya, (Archie could've used him)...

WR Drew Hill, Saints Killer with the Rams, later part of Houston's Run & Shoot...

Re: Saints worst draft bust of all-time?

Ricky was not a bust. When you rush for 250 yds in a game and still lose the problems go way deeper than RB. So many games mismanaged. We were still winning 6-7 games with him. He was a good RB on a horrible team.

I’ll go further back 1987 DE Shawn knight #1 pick 11th overall. Only played a year I believe , Davenport drafted in similar spot is all world compared to him

Ricky had 1000 yards in 10 games his rookie season, didn't he? Think he got hurt after that. What we paid for him in the draft isn't his responsibility

Re: Saints worst draft bust of all-time?

I don't even think the kicker was a bust. No kicker should ever be drafted that high. Dumbest pick of all time, sure. Probably the dumbest pick ever in the NFL.

Re: Saints worst draft bust of all-time?

Yeah, Ricky Williams had a great career. He had 10x yards in his career. If he’s a bust then Deuce is a bust...and he wasn’t.

I think Utah nailed it.
Not only the biggest draft bust in Saints history,
but also Saints worst draft pick of all time.

Sullivan for sure. I remember I was on a vacation in Vegas and got a newspaper from the hotel and read about that awful trade-up and pick. To me that pick happened in Vegas and should've stayed in Vegas LOL.

Plenty can wear that hat, not just Sullivan. Knight is another gem.

Dunbar, Ellis, Anthony more recently.

Remember Charlie Brown. Egg Ellis. Waisted picks in the trenches, they hurt.
