Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
1 Attachment(s)
In about a year, New Orleanians will have to start getting used to calling the Superdome by a new name.
New Orleans Saints spokesman Greg Bensel confirmed Tuesday that Mercedes-Benz won't renew the naming rights to the Superdome. The end to the agreement with the German carmaker, which is set to expire in July 2021, has set off a search for another sponsor. https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.town...ze=1700%2C1133 "The agreement is not being renewed, based on Mercedes-Benz having other opportunities," Bensel said. "Mercedes-Benz has been an excellent partner for our team, the building and our region. We could not have asked for a more well-respected global company to have as our inaugural naming rights partner." The search marks just the second time in the Superdome's 45-year history that its naming rights have been up for grabs, and will end an unusual three years in which the Saints and arch-rival Atlanta Falcons both played in stadiums with the same sponsor. more here on NOLA |

I was just thinking about the dome yesterday and thinking if the dome would ever add glass panels to allow natural light in Maybe with a new sponsor, the new company would add a few glass panels. What do you think ?

Re: Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
It'd be swell if we could go back to just calling it the Louisiana Superdome, but, you know... That's not corporate sounding.
I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to remember when almost all stadiums, domes and arenas across all sports were named whatever their owners wanted to call them, and it was unique. Kingdome, Silverdome, Superdome, Candlestick Park, Astrodome, etc. And then, almost overnight, everything had a corporate name. And it always sounds so dumb. Now it's awkward names like CenturyLink Field, Minute Maid Park, Mercedez Benz Stadium, Oracle Park (previously AT&T Park, SBC Park and Pacific Bell Park, all since 2000) SunTrust Park, NRG Stadium, and on it goes. You can't get used to one name, before another company buys the rights and changes the name. They don't just sponsor it, they want to BE the name. Anyway, I'm done ranting. Now get off my lawn. |
Re: Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
^^^^ yep.
It will always be the Louisiana Superdome for me. |

Re: Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
From what I've read and heard, the target money will be around $100 million to get the naming rights for 10-15 years. So it will take a pretty big brand to throw that kind of cash around. Not sure if they could swing it, but how about the "Popeye's Love that chicken dome".

Back in the day, my dad purchased a 'pre owned' 1974 MB 450 SLC from a retired doctor in the Hammond area. We traveled a lot by car in the late 80's in that machine. AC blew ice cold, the natuzzi leather was soft/comfortable & it ran as smooth as butter on the highway. It's even been to Windsdor Canada twice. Not one mechanical issue. By the time it was on it's last leg, Dad had well over 225k on the odometer. Bullet proof German engineering. But yeah, I hear you. Mercedes Benz simply don't engineer their automobiles like they used to. |

The Amazon Superdome.
Why? Only because Amazon is big in meaning. Amazon Rainforest Bezos, like him or not or like Amazon or not? So what! For laughs.... The Cocoa-Cola Superdome The GEICO Superdome The All State Superdome. I am with GEICO, but I like how All State Superdome sounds. The China Superdome because China needs to be bankrupted and it sounds like the movie, The China Syndrome. The CNN FoxNews Superdome ehhh? Seriously, some big company has to do it. It could end up Walmart Superdome. The end of times. That would be the ultimate , UGH!!! Lawd hep' mer'c. Like we all have said, ummm it is The Dome. The Superdome. The Dome. The place where you saw concerts and the Ringling Bros Circus. Yearly Bayou Classic and Sugarbowl. Superbowls. Where parades ended and you , your school that marched in the parades boarded your high school bus back to school. Ok, going back in time. off subject. Anybody remember The Rivergate. Parades ended there too.;) We shall see what company picks it up. |

Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, I'd be ok with any of those. I can only hope it would also propel one of those companies to open a branch and provide some much needed tech industry jobs in the area.

I have never been a fan of branding buildings, just feels cheesy. It is the Super Dome, if you absolutely have to change the name then Mega-Super Dome is sufficient.

Two things about using the strippers sponsor. We are a family run organization and that would never fly...….OK it's only one thing.
Watching Married with children last night and during the baseball strike Al and the boys played games sponsored by......you guessed it. The nudie bar. |

I’ve always hated corporate naming of stadiums too. It’s freakin embarrassing.
Bowl games have become the stadium naming-lite version. The Willy-Nilly Snapchat and Tim’s Turf Builder Baker’s Dozen Bowl |

Tabasco is big enough. I've travelled to 32 countries - tabasco was there. Everywhere coke is - I'd be willing to bet Tabasco is there too. Went to Prague right after the Iron Curtain came down and at the restaurant we ate in there was tabasco on the table. Think of the restaurants that have it, then the people who have it. Tabasco has been on the shelves of every grocery store in the USA that I've been to. STEP UP TABASCO!!! Do the HOME Team a solid.
