Question About the Offense

I've touched on this before but didn't get much response. The top 3 teams last year (SF, BAL, KC) used a lot of pre-snap motion to confuse the defense or to give the QB a read on what the defense is doing. It adds a lot of dynamic to the offense and offers the opportunity for a lot of creativity to develop. In Payton's early years, he used a lot of pre-snap motion especially when we had Bush and Devery, confusing the defense with the possibility of an end around or a swing pass in the flat. I noticed that we hardly do any pre-snap motions anymore. Is it because of our personnel or has Payton just changed his style to a more direct attack. Does anyone have any input or thoughts on this?

I think it’s something he’s looking to add back with the addition of Ty Montgomery and the return of Taysom Hill and Deonte Harris. I honestly think that’s the style of offense he wants to run with a mobile QB taking the snaps. Why else would you draft the kid from Mississippi State? However, I think Jameis is going to shock the world.

Re: Question About the Offense

I’ve definitely noticed that we’re running the play clock all the way down every snap these last few years. I honestly think we just haven’t had the WR’s who know where they’re supposed to be and can handle the complexities of pre-snap motions.

Re: Question About the Offense

Announcer: We have the RB moving out of the back field. We have two wide receivers in motion. Drew shifts out to wide receiver while Hill moves to QB before shifting to a second tight end and Two gloves settles in for the deep ball.

I always liked shifts because it let's you know what defenses are going to do more often. When the Saints put a man in motion Drew then knows from years of film study what will happen next and picks his best option.
