S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson Slot CB

CHAUNCEY GARDNER-JOHNSON
DB, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Saints DBs coach Aaron Glenn said S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson will spend "a good amount of time" covering the slot.
Gardner-Johnson notably permitted 16 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 27 targets in coverage from the slot as a rookie. Even so, he has formidable experience there stemming from his 26 starts at Florida and profiles much better at that position than current nickel corner P.J. Williams. Gardner-Johnson at least offers the speed (4.48) and plus tackling to match above-average receiving threats from the middle of the field on a good day, especially if he continues developing in his second year.

Makes sense.

Gardner-Johnson was a top 3 slot corner in 2019. Not to mention he is football 101 text book at tackling.

This team has a lot of players who can play a lot of positions. I think we see Dennis Allen keep QBs off their game all season

They could run multiple fronts with the way they’ve assembled the team now. They could easily roll out in a 3-4 with Zack Baun and Marcus Davenport on the outside and Davis and Anzalone in the middle. Jordan, Rankins, and Onyemata upfront. I’m intrigued. Very diverse personnel. Very Patriots like.

Curious to see if the un-drafted rookie boundary cornerbacks can offer anything regarding depth, because after PJ, it's really dicey with Patrick Robinson last taking the field in less-than-full-health...

I don’t trust either one of those names on the boundary.

Understand, that's why there reserves and not starters, but they are solid clock eaters (or in baseball, inning eaters) where they can keep you close...

And it's also why I'd rather had spent FA money on a boundary CB and let Gardner take over the SS spot - younger, faster, stronger, better...

Having him on the field is a good thing. Line him up where you want.

He's good at the slot. But then again he can be pretty good at SS and maybe even FS. I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing on the outside if our talent goes down. I'd at least give him a shot at it.

For 58 minutes at least, we know they always crumble with minimal time left.
