NFL cuts 2020 preseason in half

It’s been rumored and expected. It’s now official: The 2020 preseason will be trimmed from four games to two.

Specifically, Week One and Week Four have been scrapped. The league is expected to announce the move on Thursday.

The cut in preseason games is indirectly connected to the virus. It seems the NFL is just opening up more practice time, and I guess less exposure, in the preseason.

However, if regular season games are cut down it'll be directly because of the virus. We'll see if hundreds of people can be in close contact for several hours week after week and continue to dodge the bullet.

Hopefully this will become permanent.

There has been movement to cut back the number of preseason games well before there ever was a COVID-19. It would have probably happened next year anyway with the beginning of the 17 week seasons. That said, this was being tossed around on NFL Radio a month ago as a way to open up more practice time, as you mentioned, due to the loss of the OTA's. I really don't remember anyone banging the drum to play all four.

Bruce Murray and Kirk Morrison both felt it probably would be permanent when they talked about it this morning on their show.

I'm all for having less pre-season games. Less non-important games means more practice time to get better for the season.

Lots of quality football players have made teams, the Saints, and had careers because of preseason games.

Hoping this change is permanent and also hoping this includes permanently getting rid of the cockamamie Hall of Fame game.

I agree, we wouldn’t have Pierre and other productive players if it wasn’t for the preseason

Virtually all of the player evaluation is done in practices. Hardly any takes place during preseason games. At least according to what I've heard from several sources on NFL Radio. Dual practices are far more productive for those purposes, as well. Coaches and players alike would much rather there be more practices and less (or no) games in the preseason. The owners, however, have always been in it for the added revenue.

Reduce pre-seaon, but expand rosters so the Pierre Thomas types have a chance.

Rosters will be expanded from what I am hearing. Mainly to cover short stints while players out out with COVID.

It sounds like they’re going to cut down the number of players in training camp to possibly 75. The NFLPA is pushing for no preseason at all...

I've heard nothing about that limiting to 75. Where did you see that? But, yes, I have heard the NFLPA has mentioned the possibility of no preseason games. Players have never liked them.

Edit: Okay, found it. Just came out via Schefter. It sounds like limiting players at a time at camp to 75 or 80. It implies that with fewer preseason games they basically need fewer camp bodies. That jives with what many have said for years that all but a small handful of players are already locked into the roster when training camp begins.

There is no way in hell that the owners would let the revenue from preseason get away from them. Besides we had four games and now we have two. I like that number of preseason games so that I can get a feel for my team.
